Published: October 2001

Two new flavanones and one chalcone were isolated from the peel of Citrus kinokuni Hort. ex Tanaka and identified as (2S)-5,6,7,8,4'-pentamethoxyflavanone (1), (2S)-5,6,7,3',4'-pentamethoxyflavanone (2) and 2'-hydroxy-3,4,3',4',6'-pentamethoxychalcone (3). The structures of new compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic analysis.

Key Laboratory of Chemical Biology of Natural Products, Ministry of Education, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Shandong University, Jinan, 250012, Shandong, China.

The evolutionary conservation of type III polyketide synthases (PKS) in Selaginella has been elucidated, and the critical amino acid residues of the anther-specific chalcone synthase-like enzyme (SmASCL) have been identified. Selaginella species are the oldest known vascular plants and a valuable resource for the study of metabolic evolution in land plants. Polyketides, especially flavonoids and sporopollenin precursors, are essential prerequisites for plant land colonization.

Green propolis, particularly from the unique flora of the Brazilian Caatinga biome, has gained significant interest due to its diverse chemical composition and biological activities. This study focuses on the chemical characterization and antimicrobial evaluation of Caatinga green propolis. Twelve compounds were isolated through different chromatographic techniques, including flavanones (naringenin, 7--methyleriodictyol, sakuranetin), flavones (hispidulin, cirsimaritin), flavonols (quercetin, quercetin-3-methyl ether, kaempferol, 6-methoxykaempferol, viscosine, penduletin), and one chalcone (kukulkanin B).

Department of Geriatric Intensive Medicine, Guangdong Provincial Geriatrics Institute, Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital, Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences, Guangzhou, China.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study investigates the impact of neohesperidin dihydrochalone (NHDC) on endothelial dysfunction caused by sepsis, specifically how it can counteract the damaging effects of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on blood vessels.
  • - Researchers conducted various in vivo and in vitro tests to evaluate NHDC's effectiveness in alleviating vascular leakage, enhancing cell survival, and improving antioxidant responses in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs).
  • - Results showed that NHDC significantly reduced inflammation and oxidative stress by inhibiting harmful cytokines and signaling pathways, suggesting its potential as a protective treatment for vascular dysfunction related to sepsis.
