Stephen's banded snake (Hoplocephalus stephensii) is an infrequently encountered Australian elapid species. The crude venom contains coagulant activity and the component responsible is a prothrombin activator requiring factor V for activity. SDS-PAGE of the isolated native protein revealed two bands at 23 and 36 kDa. These findings indicate that the procoagulant is similar to that found in the Australian tiger snake (Notechis scutatus) and thus resembles factor Xa.

Background: In recent years, transcatheter implantation devices to restrict pulmonary arterial flow have emerged as a potential alternative to surgical pulmonary artery banding.
Case Presentation: A term male was diagnosed with critical aortic stenosis (AS) and severely reduced left ventricle (LV) systolic function. He underwent aortic balloon valvuloplasty on day 2 of life, resulting in some antegrade flow, but LV ejection fraction only improved to 15%.

Background: Thrombin is produced by the prothrombinase complex, composed of factor (f)Xa and fVa on a phospholipid (PL) membrane surface. Snakes of the Elapidae family have venom versions of these factors that cause coagulopathy in prey. Group C venoms contain both fⅩa and fⅤa orthologues.

Objective: To compare patient characteristics and overall survival for infants with critical left heart obstruction after hybrid palliation (bilateral pulmonary artery banding with or without ductal stenting) versus nonhybrid management (eg, Norwood, primary transplantation, biventricular repair, or transcatheter/surgical aortic valvotomy).
Methods: From 2005 to 2019, 1045 infants in the Congenital Heart Surgeons' Society critical left heart obstruction cohort underwent interventions across 28 institutions. Using a balancing score propensity analysis, 214 infants who underwent hybrid palliation and 831 infants who underwent nonhybrid management were proportionately matched regarding variables significantly associated with mortality and variables noted to significantly differ between groups.

The Australasian region is home to the most diverse elapid snake radiation on the planet (Hydrophiinae). Many of these snakes have evolved into unique ecomorphs compared to elapids on other continents; however, their venom compositions are poorly known. The Australian elapid (Stephen's banded snake) is an arboreal snake with a unique morphology.

Copy number variants (CNVs) are recognized as a crucial genetic cause of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). Chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA), the first-tier diagnostic test for individuals with NDDs, has been utilized to detect CNVs in clinical practice, but most reports are still from populations of European ancestry. To contribute more worldwide clinical genomics data, we investigated the genetic etiology of 410 Han Chinese patients with NDDs (151 with autism and 259 with unexplained intellectual disability (ID) and developmental delay (DD)) using CMA (Affymetrix) after G-banding karyotyping.
