The action of mercury on cell membranes.

Cell Mol Biol Lett

J. Stefan Institute, Jamova 39, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Published: January 2002

The action of mercuric chloride and methyl mercuric chloride on the membrane lateral domain organization of bovine, equine, and canine erythrocytes was studied. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra of spin-labeled erythrocytes were analyzed with respect to their lateral domain structure. Continuous alteration of the membrane domain populations revealed that mercuric compounds affect the membrane via the evolution of toxic events in the cells.

The accumulation of Hg in the environment threatens both human health and the biosphere. The development of cost-effective and efficient nanofibers for removing Hg offers a different solution to this issue. Herein, calcium alginate nanofiber (GF), Delonix regia gum/alginate nanofiber (DGF), and thiosemicarbazide/Delonix regia gum/alginate nanofiber (TDGF) were successfully synthesized by electrospinning technique then crosslinking with 2 % calcium chloride solution.

Exploring the protective role of L. extract in testicular toxicity induced by mercuric chloride: insights into hormonal modulation and cell survival pathways.

Toxicol Res (Camb)

February 2025

Department of Gastroenterology, Affiliated Hospital of Hebei University, School of Clinical Medical, No. 212 Yuhua East Road, Lianchi district, Baoding, China.

The study investigated the effects of L. extract (HPE) on oxidative damage caused by mercuric chloride (HgCl₂) in rat testes. Sixty male Wistar rats were divided into six groups: a sham group, a HgCl₂ group, three groups receiving HgCl₂ with HPE at doses of 250, 500, and 750 mg/kg, and a control group treated with 750 mg/kg HPE alone over 50 days.

Several recent investigations into montane regions have reported on excess mercury accumulation in high-altitude forest ecosystems. This study explored the Singalila National Park, located on the Singalila ridge of the Eastern Himalayas, revealing substantial mercury contamination. Particular focus was on Sandakphu (3636 m), the highest peak in West Bengal, India.

The impact of mercury exposure on male reproduction: Mechanistic insights.

J Trace Elem Med Biol

February 2025

Indiana University, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Indianapolis, USA. Electronic address:

Mercury is a pervasive environmental toxin with significant negative effects on human health. In occupational settings, incidents such as the Minamata and Niigata disease in Japan and the large-scale methylmercury poisoning in Iraq have highlighted the severe health impacts of mercury exposure. It is widely accepted that all forms of mercury including methylmercury and mercuric chloride have the potential to induce toxic effects in mammals, and there is increasing concern about the impact of environmentally relevant levels of mercury on reproductive functions.
