The lipid bilayer thickness d(L), the transbilayer distance of lipid phosphate groups d(pp/inf> and the lipid surface area A(L) of fluid hydrated bilayers of lamellar phases of egg phosphatidylcholine or dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine containing N-alkyl-N,N-dimethylamine N-oxides (CnNO), 1,4-butanedi-ammonium-N,N'-dialkyl-N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl dibromides (GSn) or mono-hydrochlorides of [2-(alkyloxy)phenyl]-2-(1-piperidinyl)ethylesters of carbamic acid (CnA) were obtained by X-ray diffraction, and the bilayer thickness in extruded unilamellar dioleoylphosphatidylcholine vesicles containing C12NO was obtained by the neutron scattering. The values of d(L), d(pp/inf> and A(L) change linearly up to the 1:1 amphiphile:lipid molar ratio. The slopes of these dependencies increase for d(L) and d(pp/inf> and decrease for AL) with an increasing number of carbons n in the amphiphile long hydrocarbon substituent (18> or =n> or =8 for CnNO, 16> or =n> or =9 for GSn, 12> or =n> or =5 for CnA), while the opposite trends are observed for the short substituent (8> or =n>/=6 for CnNO, 9> or =n> or =7 for GSn, 5> or =n> or =3 for CnA). In case of long substituents, the effects on dL), dpp/inf> and AL) are caused by the decrease in the difference between the lipid and amphiphile hydrocarbon chain lengths and by the increase in their van der Waals attraction. The short substituent amphiphiles are mobile and exchange between multiple binding sites in the bilayer, minimizing the bilayer surface area.

The contamination of water systems by antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin (CIP), which is used to treat bacterial infections, poses severe risks to environmental safety and public health. To address this issue, a novel zwitterionic polymeric nanocomposite (PNs-HTC) was developed in this study. This novel material was synthesized using alkylated chitosan ionic macromonomers, ionic monomers and combined with hydrotalcite (HTC) via in situ free radical polymerization.

Oxidation of thia-pentapyrrane S-P4 with terminal β-linked pyrrole and thiophene units in the presence of various metal ions has been found to afford distinct porphyrinoids. Specifically, N-confused thiasapphyrin (1), Cu(III) norrole (2), neo-confused phlorin (3), and p-benzinorrole (4) were obtained, when S-P4 was oxidized with p-chloranil in acetonitrile in the presence of Ni2+, Cu2+, Cd2+, and Co2+, respectively. The structures of 1-4 have been clearly elucidated by NMR spectroscopy, HRMS, and X-ray crystal diffraction (for 2-4).

In this paper, we offer a unique green synthetic approach for producing iron sulfide quantum dots (FeS QD)-chitosan composites using gel chemistry. The technique uses the environmental features of chitosan, a biocompatible and biodegradable polysaccharide, and the excellent electrical properties of FeS QDs. By sustainable chemistry principles, the synthesis process is carried out under gentle settings, using aqueous solutions and avoiding hazardous solvents and strong chemicals.

The ongoing challenge of water pollution necessitates innovative approaches to remove organic contaminants from wastewater. In this work, new two-dimensional S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts BiO/CdS and MoS/BiO/CdS that are intended for the effective photocatalytic destruction of 4-nitrophenol, a dangerous organic pollutant, are synthesized and characterized. Utilizing a solvothermal method, successfully generated these ternary nanocomposites, which were characterized through various techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), high resolution transmission electronmicroscopy (HRTEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Telle (BET) and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS).

The supercritical antisolvent (SAS) method can effectively improve the bioavailability of poorly water-soluble drugs. However, the current supercritical equipment and processes were not fully developed, making industrialization difficult to achieve. Therefore, an externally adjustable annular gap nozzle and its supporting equipment were designed.
