The effect of chlorpromazine (50 mg. im) on the plasma concentration of immunoreactive beta-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (beta-MSH) and prolactin was studied in 8 hospitalized subjects with non-endocrine skin disorders. Plasma beta-MSH concentrations remained unchanged over a period of 7 h in 6 subjects. In the remaining 2 subjects there was a slight increase. Plasma prolactin concentrations were greatly increased in all subjects 1 1/2-3 h after the injection and had almost returned to pre-injection levels by 7 h. This suggests that the control of beta-MSH secretion in man, unlike that of prolactin in man and MSH peptides in other mammals, is not predominantly inhibitory. The reason for this discrepancy may be that beta-MSH is not a natural MSH in man and occurs as part of the lipotropic hormone (LPH) or as a breakdown product.

The distribution pattern of chemokine CXCL14-immunoreactive cells was examined by immunohistochemistry in the pituitary of the gecko Hemidactylus platyurus. Immunoreactive cells were observed in the pars intermedia and pars distalis of the pituitary, but not in the pars nervosa. All α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (αMSH)-producing cells were immunoreactive for CXCL14 in the pars intermedia.

The morphogenesis of the pituitary gland and the chronological appearance of adenohypophyseal cells were investigated for the first time in the Somalian cave fish Phreatichthys andruzzii by immunocytochemistry. The adult adenohypophysis contained: a rostral pars distalis, with prolactin (PRL) cells arranged in follicles and adrenocorticotropic (ACTH) cells, a proximal pars distalis with somatotropic (GH), β-thyrotropic (TSH), β-gonadotropic type I (FSH) and type II (LH) cells and a pars intermedia with α-somatolactin (SL), α-melanotropic (MSH) and β-endorphin (END) cells. All regions were deeply penetrated by neurohypophyseal branches.

Dopamine regulates the synthesis and secretion of prolactin and α-MSH/β-endorphin in lactotrophs and melanotrophs, respectively. While a predominant dopamine receptor, D2R, is known to be expressed in both the anterior and intermediate lobes of the pituitary gland, no previous immunohistochemical studies have shown the existence of D2R in the plasma membrane of pituitary endocrine cells. The present study clearly demonstrated a selective localization of the D2R immunoreactivity in primary cilia of lactotrophs and melanotrophs in the mouse adenohypophysis.

Cell volume changes induced in various ways (anisosmotic environment, hormones, oxidative stress, substrate uptake) are an integral part of a signal transduction network regulating cell function. Cell swelling has received increasing attention as a stimulus for a variety of intracellular phenomena. One of the most remarkable effects of cell swelling is its powerful effect in inducing exocytosis of material in intracellular secretory vesicles.

The role of steroid/thyroid hormones in the regulation of endocrine cells at the level of the pituitary has remained unclear. Therefore, using single-cell quantitative real-time PCR, we examined absolute amounts of transcripts for nuclear receptors [estrogen receptors (ERs) alpha, beta, and gamma; androgen receptors (ARs) a and b; glucocorticoid receptors (GRs) 1, 2a, and 2b; and thyroid hormone receptors (TRs) alpha1, alpha2, and beta] in pituitary cells of immature (IM) and mature (M) male tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. In the two reproductive stages, ACTH cells expressed only ERbeta, whereas all other pituitary cell types expressed ERalpha + beta, and a subpopulation coexpressed ARa, ARb, GR1, GR2b, and TRbeta but lacked ERgamma, GR2a, TRalpha1, and TRalpha2.
