Holmium-loaded PLLA microspheres are useful systems in radioembolization therapy of liver metastases because of their low density, biodegradability and favourable radiation characteristics. Neutron activated Ho-loaded microspheres showed a surprisingly low release of the relatively small holmium complex. In this paper factors responsible for this behaviour are investigated, in particular by the use of differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The holmium complex is soluble in PLLA up to 8% in films and 17% in microspheres. Interactions between carbonyl groups of PLLA, and the Ho-ion in the HoAcAc complex, explain very satisfactorily the high stability of holmium-loaded microspheres.

This study aims to evaluate the feasibility, safety, and effectiveness of an optimized treatment approach for complex renal calculi, utilizing visual needle nephroscopy in conjunction with standard PCNL and holmium YAG laser. We collected data from 62 patients diagnosed with complex kidney stones who underwent this combined procedure using the visual needle nephroscope (Needle-perc, Youcare Tech, Wuhan, China). The percutaneous nephroscopic working channel was established by visual needle nephroscope, and the primary channel was expanded to 20 F to treat most of the main body of the calculi with a 550 μm holmium laser fiber.

BPH is a common urological pathology that affects 2480 per 100,000 men worldwide. With a rising population and increased age expectancy, the prevalence of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is increasing (Awedew et al. in Lancet Healthy Longev 3(11), 2022).

The development of precise and efficient detection methods is essential for the real-time monitoring of antibiotics, especially in environmental and biological matrices. This study aims to address this challenge by introducing a novel electrochemical sensor for the targeted detection of moxifloxacin hydrochloride (MFN), a fourth-generation fluoroquinolone. The sensor is based on a holmium niobate (HNO) and functionalized carbon nanofiber (f-CNF) nanocomposite, synthesized via a hydrothermal approach and subsequently characterized for its structural and electrochemical properties.

This case report describes the successful management of a knotted ureteric stent in a 57-year-old male with diabetes mellitus, who presented with left flank pain and lower urinary tract symptoms after seven months of stent placement. Initial imaging revealed migration and encrustation of the stent, along with knotting at the proximal end. As rigid cystoscopy to attempt stent retrieval met resistance, a semirigid ureteroscope was used to laser transect the stent, allowing for the insertion of a new stent.
