Localization and expression of cartilage-derived morphogenetic protein (CDMP)-1 in tissues at the site of ossification of the ligamentum flavum (OLF) were examined by immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization. The CDMP-1 protein and messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) were localized in spindle-shaped cells and chondrocytes in the OLF tissues. CDMP-1 was not detected in cells in non-ossified sites. These data indicate that CDMP-1 is locally activated and localized in spindle-shaped cells and chondrocytes at the site of OLE. Given the previously reported promoting action of CDMP-1 for chondrogenesis, the current results suggest that CDMP-1 may be involved in the progression of OLF, leading to the narrowing of spinal canal and thus causing severe clinical manifestations.

An alternative source for auricular reconstruction is in vitro tissue engineered cartilage using stem/progenitor cells. Objective: Destruction of extracellular matrix (ECM), especially collagen II and aggrecan, is an essential feature of intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD). This project planned to elucidate the role of cartilage-derived morphogenetic protein-1 (CDMP-1) in the collagen II and aggrecan synthesis of nucleus pulposus (NP) cells under the IL-1β induced degeneration.
Patients And Methods: We cultured human primary NP cells in the different concentrations of IL-1β medium and analyzed the CDMP-1 level.

Human osteoarthritis cartilage contains chondrocytes (OAC) and mesenchymal stromal cells (OA-MSC). Here, we found that TGF-β had different effects on OA-MSC and OAC, and revealed its lateral signaling mechanism in OA. RNAseq analysis indicated that OA-MSC expressed the same level of Bone Morphogenetic Protein (BMP) Receptor-1A as OAC but only 1/12 of Transforming Growth Factor beta (TGF-β) Receptor-1.

Background: Since cartilage-derived stem/progenitor cells (CSPCs) were first identified in articular cartilage using differential adhesion to fibronectin, their self-renewal capacity and niche-specific lineage preference for chondrogenesis have propelled their application for cartilage tissue engineering. In many adult tissues, stem/progenitor cells are recognised to be involved in tissue homeostasis. However, the role of nasoseptal CSPCs has not yet been elucidated.
