Published: October 2001

Selection of long-term ventricular assist devices in heart failure patients depends on indication, intention of mechanical support, and availability of devices. Even if many more issues of mechanical support like infection, thromboembolism, and device failure are still unresolved, acceptable results can already be achieved with the current systems.

We present a case of spontaneous hemorrhage in an emphysematous bulla, complicated by anticoagulation. Bullous emphysema is a well-recognized complication of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and a rare manifestation is hemorrhage into preexisting pulmonary bullae. A 69-year-old male patient presented to the emergency department with hemoptysis, shortness of breath, and productive cough.

What is left in miombo woodlands? Rarity and commonness of woody species, commercial timber species, and lawful harvestable diameter classes.

Heliyon

January 2025

Departamento de Engenharia Florestal, Universidade Eduardo Mondlane, Av. Julius Nyerere Número 3453, Campus Universitário Principal, Edifício Número 1, 257, Maputo, Mozambique.

Mozambican miombo woodlands (MWs) have been experiencing severe anthropogenic threats, recognized to have an impact on plant species distribution, occurrence, diversity, and rarity patterns. Based on 3725 0.1 ha plots distributed across the country's MWs, this study aimed to assess the species rarity and commonness, protection status, and availability of commercial timber in MWs under varied environmental conditions.

Hollow-core optical fiber (HCF) gas cells are an attractive option for many applications including metrology and non-linear optics due to the enhanced gas-light interaction length in a compact and lightweight format. Here, we report the first demonstration and characterization of a selectively pressurized, hermetically sealed hollow-core fiber-based gas cell, where the core is filled with a higher gas pressure than the cladding to enhance the optical performance. This differential gas pressure creates a gas-induced differential refractive index (GDRI) that is shown to enable significant modification of the HCF's optical performance.

Experiences, perceptions and ethical considerations of the malaria infection study in Thailand.

BMC Med Ethics

January 2025

Mahidol Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit, Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, 420/6 Rajvithi Road, Thunphayathai, Bangkok, 10400, Thailand.

Background: Thailand has made significant progress in malaria control efforts in the past decade, with a decline in the number of reported cases. However, due to cross-border movements over the past 5 years, reported malaria cases in Thailand have risen. The Malaria Infection Study in Thailand (MIST) involves deliberate infection of healthy volunteers with Plasmodium vivax malaria parasites, and the assessment of the efficacy of potential vaccine and drug candidates in order to understand acquired protection against malaria parasites.

Background: Preventure is a selective school-based personality-targeted program that has shown long-term benefits in preventing student alcohol use, internalising and externalising problems when delivered by psychologists. In this first Australian randomised controlled trial of school staff implementation of Preventure, we aimed to examine i) acceptability, feasibility, and fidelity and ii) effectiveness of Preventure on student alcohol use, internalising, and externalising symptoms.

Methods: A cluster-randomised controlled implementation trial was conducted in Sydney, Australia and was guided by the RE-AIM framework (Glasgow et al.
