Broiler chicks were reared in environmental chambers. All birds were started under ideal conditions, i.e., 30.6 C with 35% RH. Beginning at Day 36, half of the chicks were maintained at 24 C and 35% RH. The other half were subjected to a cyclic temperature-RH regime that approximated a typical August day in central Mississippi (heat treatment). Half of each of the described groups received implants of osmotic pumps that released adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) at 8 IU/kg BW/d for 7 d. The remaining birds received placebo pumps. The main effects of ACTH and heat treatments were similar. Both treatments caused reductions in BW, carcass weight (CW), carcass protein (CP), and muscle calorie (C) content. ACTH, but not heat, reduced carcass moisture (M). Carcass fat and ash, however, were not affected. Most changes were not reversed after 1 wk of recovery. Although visible signs of pale, soft, exudative muscle (PSE) were present, "white" areas of muscle were absent. The decreased meat yield and detrimental changes in meat quality suggest that stress, whether induced hormonally or by exposure to over-heating, caused losses that were as severe as those associated with PSE under field conditions.

Hu sheep is characterized by its excellent fecundity and high adaptability to various ecological environments. To reveal the molecular basis involved in Hu sheep, we first examined the 10 index of neuroendocrine and metabolism in blood in Hu sheep during non-stress period (April-May) and stress period (July-August) using ELISA, including CRH, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), cortisol, aldosterone, adrenaline, T3,T4, SOD, GSH-PX, and T-AOC. Then we conducted the Whole genome DNA methylation sequencing in blood and performed the comparative analysis of global DNA methylation between the non-stress period and the stress period.

To investigate the possible protective effect of hesperidin on intestinal damage caused by high-temperature heat stress in yellow-feathered broilers, 960 broilers aged 21 days were randomly divided into four groups: HT, HT300, HT450, and HT600, with each group receiving different amounts of hesperidin supplementation (0, 300, 450, and 600 mg/kg). The dietary supplementation of hesperidin could mitigate the elevation of corticosterone (CORT) and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ATCH) levels in serum from yellow-feathered broilers induced by heat stress. The supplementation of 300 mg/kg and 450 mg/kg of hesperidin reduced crypt depth and increased the V/C ratio in the small intestine compared to the HT group.

The Second Affiliated Hospital and Yuying Children's Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Medicine, Wenzhou, China; Zhejiang Provincial Key Laboratory of Anesthesiology, Wenzhou Medical University, Wenzhou, China; Key Laboratory of Pediatric Anesthesiology Ministry of Education, Wenzhou Medical University, Wenzhou, Zhejiang, China.

Objective: Multiple factors contribute to the development of perioperative neurocognitive disorders (PND). This study was designed to investigate whether Histone Deacetylase 6 (HDAC6) was involved in the formation of postoperative cognitive dysfunction in elderly mice by regulating the degree of acetylation of heat shock protein (HSP90) and related protein functions and quantities.

Methods: C57BL/6 J male mice were randomly divided into six groups: control naive (group Control), anesthesia (group Anesthesia), splenectomy surgery (group Surgery), splenectomy surgery plus dissolvent (group Vehicles), splenectomy surgery plus the inhibitor ACY-1215 (group Ricolinostat), and splenectomy surgery plus the inhibitor RU-486(group Mifepristone).

Forty castrated Holstein calves underwent an adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) challenge to assess the effects of premortem stress on the (LL) following harvest. LL biopsies were collected before the challenge, at different harvest times (2, 12, 24, and 48 h; = 10), and after 14 d aging. The expression of small heat shock proteins (SHSPs), deglycase 1 (DJ-1), and troponin were analyzed.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the impact of heat stress on the pituitary-adrenal axis in broilers and explored whether early-age thermal conditioning (ETC) and vitamin C could mitigate these effects.
  • Four groups of one-day-old broilers were created: a control group, a group receiving vitamin C, a group exposed to ETC, and a group combining both treatments.
  • Results showed that the combination of ETC and vitamin C significantly increased the area and core size of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) cells and cortisol levels, suggesting enhanced adaptation to heat stress in the T + C group.
