Nasal hemangiopericytoma-like (HPCL) tumor is a rare vascular tumor and should be differentiated from typical hemangiopericytomas (HPCs). This study reports the case of an HPCL tumor in a 77-year-old man with histological and immunohistochemical features. After preoperative evaluation of the blood supply, the dark-red right intranasal tumor was resected completely via the right maxillary sinus. The final histopathological diagnosis was HPCL tumor based on several stains: vimentin (+), alpha-SMA (+), etc. Moreover, there were few p53 (+) cells and the Ki-67 and topoisomerase IIalpha labeling indices were both under 5%. These findings indicated that this tumor was a low-grade malignancy. The immunohistochemical investigations used are useful for making the diagnosis of HPCL tumor and determining the treatment, malignancy, and prognosis.

Aims: Increased expression of inhibitor of apoptosis (IAP) genes has been associated with progressive cancer and chemoresistance. Accordingly, blockade of IAPs by BV6 has resulted in ameliorative outcomes. Interleukin (IL)-6 is another important mediator involved in the growth and survival of tumor cells.

Background: PD1/PDL1-directed therapies have been unsuccessful for multiple myeloma (MM), an incurable cancer of plasma cells in the bone marrow (BM). Therefore, other immune checkpoints such as extracellular adenosine and its immunosuppressive receptor should be considered. CD39 and CD73 convert extracellular ATP to adenosine, which inhibits T-cell effector functions via the adenosine receptor A2A (A2AR).

Narrow-band imaging in the diagnosis of vascular nasal lesions.

Am J Otolaryngol

May 2013

Department of Clinical Sciences and Community Health, Fondazione IRCCS Ca' Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico, University of Milan, Milan, Italy.

The management of unilateral nasal lesions can sometimes be a challenge and an ordinary bioptic assessment should be avoided in order to prevent complications due to their possible vascular or meningoencephalic origin. Narrow-band imaging (NBI) endoscopy could improve the diagnosis of vascular nasal formations by enhancing the visualisation of the mucosal microvascular supply. We describe the case of a 68-year-old male patient who was brought to our attention because of a left nasopharyngeal mass that had elsewhere been unsuccessfully biopsied (with conspicuous bleeding) and assessed by means of traditional endoscopic and radiological techniques.

HIC1 (hypermethylated in cancer 1) is a tumor suppressor gene epigenetically silenced or deleted in many human cancers. HIC1 is involved in regulatory loops modulating p53- and E2F1-dependent cell survival, growth control, and stress responses. HIC1 is also essential for normal development because Hic1-deficient mice die perinatally and exhibit gross developmental defects throughout the second half of development.

[Effect of doxorubicin induced GM-CSF gene expression regulated by Egr-1 promoter on recovery of hematopoietic function in bearing-melanoma mice].

Department of Hematology and Oncology, The First Affiliated Hospital, PLA General Hospital, Beijing, 100037, China.

This study was purposed to investigate the effect of hematopoietic growth factor expression regulated by Egr-1 promoter on the recovery of hematopoietic function in bearing-melanoma mice after chemotherapy with doxorubicin (ADM). The human GM-CSF cDNA and enhanced green fluorescence protein (GFP) cDNA were linked together with internal ribozyme entry site (IRES) and then were inserted into the expression vector pCI-neo under control of the Egr-1 promoter (Egr-EG). This vector was transduced into human bone marrow stromal cell lines HFCL by lipofectamine and was transfused in severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) mice.
