Background: Non-invasive photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT), employing specific infrared light wavelengths to stimulate biological tissues, has recently gained attention for its application to treat neurological disorders. Here, we aimed to uncover the cellular targets of PBMT and assess its potential as a therapeutic intervention for multiple sclerosis (MS).

Methods: We applied daily dorsoventral PBMT in an experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) mouse model, which recapitulates key features of MS, and revealed a strong positive impact of PBMT on the sensorimotor deficits.

Successful reactive balance control requires coordinated modulation of hip, knee, and ankle torques. Stabilizing joint torques arise from neurally-mediated feedforward tonic muscle activation that modulates muscle short-range stiffness, which provides an instantaneous "mechanical feedback" to the perturbation. In contrast, neural feedback pathways activate muscles in response to sensory input, generating joint torques after a delay.

Background And Objectives: Frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) includes different clinical syndromes with distinct patterns of symptoms and neuroanatomical locations of neurodegeneration. However, FTLD is clinically heterogeneous (with overlapping symptoms across several domains) and neuroanatomically heterogeneous (with brain atrophy in different locations in different patients). Despite our environment often being uncertain, we generally manage to generate stable motor behaviors. While reactive control plays a major role in this achievement, proactive control is critical to cope with the substantial noise and delays that affect neuromusculoskeletal systems. In particular, muscle co-contraction is exploited to robustify feedforward motor commands against internal sensorimotor noise as was revealed by stochastic optimal open-loop control modeling.
