People in Eastern Asia, including Japan, traditionally consume higher amounts of sodium chloride than in the United States and Western Europe, and it is common knowledge that impaired insulin secretion-rather than insulin resistance-is highly prevalent in Asian people who have diabetes mellitus. We previously reported that mice fed a high-fat and high-sodium chloride (HFHS) diet had a relatively lower degree of obesity than mice fed a high-fat diet, but had a comparatively impaired insulin secretion. Pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma (PPGL) are rare chromaffin-cell tumors producing adrenaline and/or noradrenaline, or solely dopamine. A 52-year-old man presenting with hypertension (141/79 mm Hg) and weight loss (10 kg in 6 months) was admitted to our hospital. Computed tomography revealed a massive right adrenal mass (150 mm) with partial necrosis, accompanied by multiple liver nodules.

These neurotransmitters (NTs) can either affect classical neurotransmitter signaling or directly trigger trace amine-associated receptors (TAARs), with still unclear consequences for host physiology. Compared to gut microbiota, less information is available on the role of skin microbiota in NT production.
