Six and a half years after adoption. 6- to 12-year-old children reared in Romanian orphanages for more than 8 months in their first years of life (RO. n = 18) had higher cortisol levels over the daytime hours than did early adopted (EA, < or = 4 months of age, n = 15) and Canadian born (CB, n = 27) children. The effect was marked, with 22% of the RO children exhibiting cortisol levels averaged over the day that exceeded the mean plus 2 SD of the EA and CB levels. Furthermore, the longer beyond 8 months that the RO children remained institutionalized the higher their cortisol levels. Cortisol levels for EA children did not differ in any respect from those of CB comparison children. This latter finding reduces but does not eliminate concerns that the results could be due to prenatal effects or birth family characteristics associated with orphanage placement. Neither age at cortisol sampling nor low IQ measured earlier appeared to explain the findings. Because the conditions in Romanian orphanages at the time these children were adopted were characterized by multiple risk factors, including gross privation of basic needs and exposure to infectious agents, the factor(s) that produced the increase in cortisol production cannot be determined. Nor could we determine whether these results reflected effects on the limbic-hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis directly or were mediated by differences in parent-child interactions or family stress occasion by behavioral problems associated with prolonged orphanage care in this sample.

Background: Managing postoperative pain and stress response was critical in laparoscopic myomectomy, a procedure for uterine fibroids. Ropivacaine transversus abdominis plane block (RTAPB) may offer enhanced analgesic efficacy and reduced stress responses compared to traditional analgesia.
Methods: This retrospective analysis examined 217 patients undergoing laparoscopic myomectomy at Hankou Hospital of Wuhan from June 2020 to September 2023.

Background: Pheochromocytoma is a rare neuroendocrine tumor, and bilateral pheochromocytomas is even less common. Due to the limited experience with such cases, this study aims to explore the optimal surgical strategy, assess the potential advantages of robotic surgery, and evaluate surgical outcomes for managing bilateral pheochromocytomas.
Case Description: This report presented a case of a 33-year-old woman with bilateral pheochromocytomas related to multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2a (MEN2A), who was successfully managed by synchronous transperitoneal robotic-assisted bilateral cortical-sparing adrenalectomy.

Purpose: Our study aimed to discern disparities in metabolic, hormonal profiles, and comorbidities among patients with pituitary Cushing (PC), adrenal Cushing (AC), and Mild autonomous cortisol secretion (MACS).
Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis involving 76 patients diagnosed with PC ( = 26), AC ( = 21), and MACS ( = 29) at our clinic. We compared the groups' demographic data, clinical characteristics, biochemical profiles, hormonal analyses, and surgical interventions.

Adolescents' experiences of discrimination and their health consequences are understudied in non-Western cultures. Using data from 90 rural Chinese adolescents ( = 13.70; 49% female), this study examined cumulative and daily experiences of peer discrimination (based on socioeconomic status, gender, parental migration status, appearance, grades) and their associations with diurnal cortisol output.

Background: Non-functional adrenal incidentaloma (NFAI) is associated with increased risk of adverse cardiometabolic outcome. Identifying predictors of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) may enable more appropriate management strategies in patients with NFAI. We aimed to investigate body composition parameters and ASCVD risk in patients with NFAI.
