Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common type of kidney cancer arising from renal tubular epithelial cells and is characterized by a high aggressive behavior and invasiveness that lead to poor prognosis and high mortality rate. Diagnosis of RCC is generally incidental and occurs when the stage is advanced and the disease is already metastatic. The management of RCC is further complicated by an intrinsic resistance of this malignancy to chemotherapy and radiotherapy, which aggravates the prognosis.

Background: Doxorubicin (DOX) is a widely used anticancer drug; However, its nephrotoxicity limits its therapeutic efficacy. This study investigates the protective effects of Perilla Alcohol (PA) against DOX-induced nephrotic syndrome (NS), focusing on its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties through the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) pathways.

Methods: A DOX-induced nephrotic syndrome (NS) rat model and a DOX-treated Mouse Podocyte Cell line 5 (MPC5) cell model were used to evaluate the renal protective effects of PA.

Article Synopsis
  • VPA, commonly prescribed for psychiatric and neurological disorders, may cause kidney injury with chronic use; this study investigates the underlying mechanisms and potential protective strategies.
  • Rats were divided into groups for testing VPA-induced kidney damage and subsequent treatments with indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) to assess their protective effects.
  • Results showed that VPA reduced antioxidant levels and increased inflammatory markers in kidneys, but IAA and CDCA effectively improved these conditions by enhancing antioxidant defenses and reducing inflammation.

Objective: Ferroptosis has been described in association with acute kidney injury (AKI)-induced sepsis. Fibronectin type III domain containing protein 5 (FNDC5)/irisin plays a crucial role in renal protection. The objective of this study was to investigate whether FNDC5/irisin is involved in AKI-induced sepsis by modulating ferroptosis, and the molecular mechanisms that may be involved.

Lyophilized powder of calf bone marrow hydrolysate liposomes improved renal anemia: In vitro and in vivo evaluation.

PLoS One

December 2024

Department of Research and Development, Jinan Perfect Biological Technology Co., LTD, Jinan, Shandong, China.

This study aimed to find whether oral administration of calf bone marrow hydrolysate liposomes (CBMHL) can improve renal anemia. Calf bone marrow was defatted, papain hydrolyzed, liposomalized and lyophilized. Its hematopoietic ability was proved by the colony formation experiment of umbilical cord blood hematopoietic stem cells in vitro.
