, a slow-growing nontuberculous mycobacterium, causes Buruli ulcer, a neglected tropical disease. Distinguishing from related species, including , poses challenges with respect to making accurate identifications. In this study, we developed a rapid and simple identification method based on mycobacterial lipid profiles and used matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) to analyze the lipid profiles of ( = 35) and ( = 19) isolates.

Background: Deficiency in the lysosomal enzyme, glucocerebrosidase (GCase), caused by mutations in the GBA1 gene, is the most common genetic risk factor for Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the consequence of reduced enzyme activity within neural cell sub-types remains ambiguous. Thus, the purpose of this study was to define the effect of GCase deficiency specifically in human astrocytes and test their non-cell autonomous influence upon dopaminergic neurons in a midbrain organoid model of PD.

Neuroprotective Actions of Cannabinoids in the Bovine Isolated Retina: Role of Hydrogen Sulfide.

Pharmaceuticals (Basel)

January 2025

Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Texas Southern University, Houston, TX 77004, USA.

Both hydrogen sulfide and endocannabinoids can protect the neural retina from toxic insults under in vitro and in vivo conditions. The aim of the present study was two-fold: (a) to examine the neuroprotective action of cannabinoids [methanandamide and 2-arachidonyl glycerol (2-AG)] against hydrogen peroxide (HO)-induced oxidative damage in the isolated bovine retina and (b) to evaluate the role of endogenously biosynthesized hydrogen sulfide (HS) in the inhibitory actions of cannabinoids on the oxidative stress in the bovine retina. Isolated neural retinas from cows were exposed to oxidative damage using HO (100 µM) for 10 min.

The ultrastructural organization of the nuclei of the tegmental region in juvenile chum salmon () was examined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The dorsal tegmental nuclei (DTN), the nucleus of (NFLM), and the nucleus of the oculomotor nerve (NIII) were studied. The ultrastructural examination provided detailed ultrastructural characteristics of neurons forming the tegmental nuclei and showed neuro-glial relationships in them.
