Bayesian prior probability distributions for internal dosimetry.

Radiat Prot Dosimetry

Los Alamos National Laboratory, NM 87545, USA.

Published: December 2001

The problem of choosing a prior distribution for the Bayesian interpretation of measurements (specifically internal dosimetry measurements) is considered using a theoretical analysis and by examining historical tritium and plutonium urine bioassay data from Los Alamos. Two models for the prior probability distribution are proposed: (1) the log-normal distribution, when there is some additional information to determine the scale of the true result, and (2) the 'alpha' distribution (a simplified variant of the gamma distribution) when there is not. These models have been incorporated into version 3 of the Bayesian internal dosimetry code in use at Los Alamos (downloadable from our web site). Plutonium internal dosimetry at Los Alamos is now being done using prior probability distribution parameters determined self-consistently from population averages of Los Alamos data.

Purpose: To report outcomes in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients with lobar and segmental vascular invasion treated with resin Yttrium-90 transarterial radioembolization (Y90-TARE) with single-compartment MIRD (Medical Internal Radiation Dose) model.

Materials And Methods: This was a retrospective IRB approved study of patients with a diagnosis of HCC with vascular invasion undergoing resin Y90-TARE from 2014 to 2022 (n = 61). Patients with Body Surface Area dosimetry (n = 20), main portal vein invasion (n = 6) and patients with an ECOG of > 2 were excluded (n = 1) with a final cohort of 34 patients.

Shadow Shield Whole Body Counter (SSWBC) is used to estimate internal dose of radiation workers due to the intake of fission and activation products. The SSWBC geometry was numerically modelled in FLUKA code. The computational model was validated by comparing the experimental and simulated counting efficiencies (CEs), also known as response, using Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) reference BOttle Mannequin Absorption (BOMAB) phantom.

Zeolites are a large family of minerals and the most studied is the naturally occurring clinoptilolite. They possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and detoxifying properties which makes them valuable for medicinal use. Element analysis of zeolite's composition is necessary for its precise chemical characterization, and within this work development of a suspension method for the determination of manga nese, iron, and zinc by total reflection X-ray fluorescence spec-trometry (TXRF) was presented.

Radiopharmaceutical therapy (RPT) is advancing rapidly and achieving wider clinical application. However, RPT is not yet optimized in practice, as tumor and normal-organ dose estimates and, in turn, dose-response relationships remain poorly defined. Internal dosimetry is evolving to address such issues, transitioning from the estimation of population-average organ-level or tumor-level doses to individualized patient-specific sub-organ or sub-tumor doses.

Technical Aspects of a National Service for Paediatric Pelvic Brachytherapy.

Clin Oncol (R Coll Radiol)

December 2024

Department of Oncology, University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, 250 Euston Road, London, NW1 2PG, UK. Electronic address:

Aims: Brachytherapy is advantageous for localised rhabdomyosarcomas in children compared with external beam radiotherapy, sparing close organs at risk with highly conformal dosimetry. A methodology for planning and delivering fractionated high-dose-rate paediatric pelvic brachytherapy is detailed, and the dosimetric parameters are presented. This provides a practical template for radiotherapy departments with a similar patient cohort to implement this treatment technique.
