Activity has long been considered essential for circuit formation and maintenance. This view has recently been challenged by proper synaptogenesis and only mildly affected synapse maintenance in the absence of synaptic activity in forebrain neurons. Here, we investigated whether synaptic activity is necessary for the development and maintenance of the calyx of Held synapse.

Background: Superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD) is a vestibular-cochlear disorder in humans in which a pathological third mobile window of the otic capsule creates changes to the flow of sound pressure energy through the perilymph/endolymph. The primary symptoms include sound-induced dizziness/vertigo, inner ear conductive hearing loss, autophony, headaches, and visual problems. We have developed an animal model of this human condition in the Mongolian Gerbil that uses surgically created SSCD to induce the condition.

To summarize the clinical features and postoperative efficacy of patients with oval window atresia accompanied by facial nerve aberration. The clinical data of patients with congenital middle ear malformation with facial nerve aberration admitted to our hospital from January 2015 to March 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. There were 97 cases (133 ears) in total.

Background: Preservation of intracochlear structures and residual hearing has become a major concern in modern cochlear implant. Consequently, many efforts have been made to minimize intraoperative trauma, especially while cochlear fenestration and electrode insertion.
Methods: Building on the core concept of "soft surgery", a modified approach, described as diving technique for cochlear implant electrode array insertion is proposed.
