A new micro-procedure for the quick regiospecific analysis of triacylglycerols (TAG) with a 1,3-specific lipase, Lipozyme IM 20 (produced from strains of Muccor miehei) is described. After dissolution of triacylglycerols in butan-1-ol or butan-2-ol 250 mg of Lipozyme IM 20 were added and the whole mixture was agitated. This operation was repeated 5-10 times and the esterified fatty acids in the form of butyl esters (FABE) were dissolved in pentane and washed with water. The pentane layer was dried over sodium sulfate and the solvent was removed under vacuum to a constant weight. The residue was analysed using GC-MS. The same triacylglycerols were converted to fatty acid methyl esters (FAME). The FAME were analysed by gas chromatography (GC).

The effect of solvent has been investigated for the synthesis of bismuth gallate compounds, of which the water-based bismuth subgallate has been used as an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) for over a century. Using methanol as a solvent, two new bismuth gallates were acquired: first a flexible 3-periodic metal-organic framework (MOF) forms, which transforms upon extended synthesis times into a layered 2-periodic coordination polymer of the same bismuth-to-gallate ratio. The structures were determined by three-dimensional electron diffraction.

A quick, efficient and convenient method for the regiospecific reductive ring opening of 4,6-O-benzylidene acetals of O-/S-alkyl/aryl glycosides of mono- and disaccharides, leading to the exclusive formation of the corresponding 6-O-benzyl ethers, using sodium cyanoborohydride in the presence of molecular iodine, is reported. It has been observed that common protecting groups such as ethers and esters are well tolerated under the conditions studied. The reaction was proved unsuccessful when applied to a glucosamine-derived benzylidene acetal.
