Previous studies have shown a reduction of dopaminergic D(2) receptors (D(2)R) in the striatum after hypoxia-ischemia in newborn rats. We show here an early and transient reduction of mRNA D(2)R in nonatrophic brains following hypoxia-ischemia. The left carotid artery of P7 rats was ligated followed by hypoxia for 2 h. The rats were sacrificed after 24 h, 48 h and 14 days. D(2)R mRNA was studied by in situ hybridization, the cell number by conventional histology, and neuronal and astrocyte differentiation by immunohistochemistry. A 20% reduction of striatal mRNA D(2)R occurred 24 h after hypoxia-ischemia, whereas no reduction was observed after 48 h and 14 days. There were no differences in total cell number and in the expression of neuronal (MAP-1, MAP-2) and astrocyte (GFAP) markers between both brain hemispheres nor between control and hypoxia-ischemia animals. The early decrease in mRNA D(2)R could explain the delayed reduced D(2)R after neonatal hypoxia-ischemia.

Constipation is a functional disorder of the gastrointestinal system characterized by difficult bowel movements, infrequent defecation, reduced water content, and hard stools. This study aims to evaluate the preventive effects of fermented gold kiwis (FGK) on loperamide-induced constipation in rats and investigate its efficacy in improving constipation symptoms in human patients through a randomized clinical trial. In the animal study, FGK was administered orally at doses of 50, 125, and 250 mg/kg to constipated rats for two weeks, resulting in significant improvements in constipation parameters.

Motherhood is a costly life-history transition accompanied by behavioral and neural plasticity necessary for offspring care. Motherhood in the monogamous prairie vole is associated with decreased pair bond strength, suggesting a trade-off between parental investment and pair bond maintenance. Neural mechanisms governing pair bonds and maternal bonds overlap, creating possible competition between the two.

The use of psilocybin to treat alcohol use disorder is very promising, but its mechanisms of action remain poorly understood. We combined behavioural, pharmacological and gene expression analyses to decipher the mechanisms of action of psilocybin, for the first time, when injected into the brain. Male Long Evans rats underwent chronic operant ethanol self-administration before testing the effect of intraperitoneal psilocybin or directly within the nucleus accumbens core or the ventral tegmental area.

Background: Reserpine (RES), a Vesicular Monoamine Transporter 2 (VMAT) inhibitor agent, has been used in preclinical research for many years to create animal models for depression and to test experimental antidepressant strategies. Nevertheless, evidence of the potential use and validity of RES as a chronic pharmacological model for depression is lacking, and there are no comprehensive studies of the behavioral effects in conjunction with molecular outcomes.
Methods: Experiment 1.
There are currently only very few efficacious drug treatments for SCZ and BD, none of which can significantly ameliorate cognitive symptoms. Thus, further research is needed in elucidating molecular pathways linked to cognitive function and antipsychotic treatment. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are stable brain-enriched non-coding RNAs, derived from the covalent back-splicing of precursor mRNA molecules.
