The effects of contaminants on the biochemical parameters of the intensively farmed mussel Perna perna, are unknown. The aim of this study was to compare biochemical responses in mussels held in clean and contaminated sites in Santa Catarina Island, Brazil. Mussels were transplanted from a farming area, Ratones Grande Island (RGI), to two contaminated sites, Itacorubi (ITAC) and Hercílio Luz Bridge (HLB). A reference group was kept at RGI. After 150 and 180 days of exposure, the digestive glands of the mussels were analyzed for catalase, glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) activities. No changes were observed in the catalase activity, in both periods. Low G6PDH activity was observed in mussels transplanted for 150 days at the ITAC site. Increased GST activity was observed in mussels from ITAC and HLG sites after 180 days. These responses are probably related to the augmented discharges of domestic effluents associated with elevated rainfall index.

The interaction between dissolved organic matter (DOM) and ferrihydrite (Fh) is a crucial process to control the environmental behavior of heavy metals (HMs) in soil environments, with DOM playing a particularly strong role in HMs fate. Since chemical properties of DOM vary based on different soil parent materials, the underlying impact of DOM-Fh associations on HMs binding remains unclear. Riverbank filtration is a cost-effective and efficient method for drinking water production, using the natural filtration capacity of the river gravelbed. Removal efficiency for organic micropollutants (OMP) in field studies is generally calculated by comparing the concentrations measured in surface water and in the wells either on the same day or with a shift of fixed time interval, neither of which can account for the variability of surface water quality and travel time in the aquifer. The present study proposes a novel method based on travel time distribution determined by a numerical transport model with a hypothesis that it will provide more reliable estimate for OMP removal.

Decades of research demonstrated that microbes can remediate petroleum-contaminated environments through biodegradation of hydrocarbons. Urban ornamental shrubs have significant potential for restoring cadmium (Cd)-contaminated soil. The Cd enrichment characteristics and tolerance mechanisms of Buxus sinica and Ligustrum × vicaryi were investigated through a simulated pot pollution experiment. Specifically, the Cd content and accumulation in different plant tissues, the subcellular distribution and chemical forms of Cd in the roots, and the effects of Cd on the ultrastructure of root cells under various Cd concentrations (0, 25, 50, 100, and 200 mg kg⁻) were analyzed.
