Recently, the Council of Scientific Society Presidents (CSSP) collected data from its member organizations regarding codes of ethics. To better understand why such a survey would be undertaken, this paper begins by examining what is meant by ethics and highlights some distinctions between law and ethics. It then discusses codes of ethics, stressing their purposes and functions. Finally, it looks at the results of the CSSP survey and evaluates how various organizations formulate and implement their codes.

Envisioning better forest transitions: A review of recent forest transition scholarship.

Heliyon

October 2023

Great Lakes Forestry Centre, Canadian Forest Service, Natural Resources Canada, Research Scientist, 1219 Queen Street East, Sault Ste. Marie, P6A 2E5, Ontario, Canada.

Forest transition theory, as introduced by Alexander Mather, depicts forest recovery patterns often occurring in the wake of agricultural intensification and farmland abandonment. Since the forest transition theory was introduced, multiple pathways have been described in the scholarly literature to explain forest transition phases via varied socio-economic forces. This analysis of a set of 78 country-specific case studies published from 2019 to 2022 confirms social inequity in documented forest transitions; forest transition case studies from 2019 to 2022 were concentrated in highly developed countries.

Chronic Severe Sleep Problems among Non-Nordic Immigrants. Data from a Population Postal Survey in Mid-Sweden.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

October 2020

Department of Dermatology, Skåne University Hospital, Lund University, 221 00 Malmö, Sweden.

Sweden has a large population of both recent and established immigrants with high prevalence of risk factors for ill health. Here, we aimed to explore the prevalence of chronic severe sleep problems (CSSP) among non-Nordic-born persons, and to evaluate the risk for CSSP when fully adjusted for covariates. Our additional hypothesis was that lengthier time since immigration would reduce the risk for CSSP.

Section of Gastroenterology, Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon, NH, USA. Department of Community and Family Medicine, The Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, Hanover, NH, USA. Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX, USA. Lynn Butterly is the senior author on the paper and the Director of the New Hampshire Colonoscopy Registry.

Background And Aims: Serrated polyps (SPs) and conventional high-risk adenomas (HRAs) derive from two distinct biological pathways but can also occur synchronously. Adults with synchronous SPs and adenomas have been shown to be a high-risk group and may have a unique risk factor profile that differs from adults with conventional HRAs alone. We used the population-based New Hampshire Colonoscopy Registry (NHCR) to examine the risk profile of individuals with synchronous conventional HRAs and SPs.
