In experimental ecosystems that accommodate perch fry (Perca fluviatilis), significant structural changes within the benthic communities occurred under the effect of fish feeding on oligochaetes and on the larvae of chidonomids and other insects. Perch fry began to consume benthic animals at early developmental stages (C1-C2). The transition to regular feeding under experimental condition occurred at the D2-E stage (days 30-40), when the benthic community reached a developmental peak. The quantitative parameters characterizing the compositions of perch stomach contents and the main groups of zoobenthos closely correlated with each other. The dynamics of quantitative parameters of these animal groups (except for mollusks) proved to be determined both by the specific features of their life cycles and by the degree of consumption.

The mandarin fish (Siniperca chuatsi), as a typical freshwater carnivorous fish, has high economic value. Mandarin fish have a peculiar feeding habit of feeding on other live fry during the first-feeding period, while rejecting zooplankton or particulate feed, which may be attributed to the low expression of zooplankton-associated gene sws1 in mandarin fish. The domesticated strain of mandarin fish could feed on Artemia at 3 days post hatching (dph).

This study aimed to estimate the efficacy of two pike-perch juvenile production technologies: exclusive Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) culture (the RAS group) and pond larviculture with a transfer to the RAS at the 42nd day post-hatch (DPH). Both direct weaning on dry feed (the Pond-D group) and 10-day gradual weaning using bloodworms (the Pond-B group) after transfer to the RAS were evaluated in pond-nursed fry. Their survival and morphometric indices were monitored after the RAS habituation period (first 10 days), after the 18-day post-habituation period and after an additional 30 days of on-grow.

Mandarin fishes (Sinipercidae) are piscivores that feed solely on live fry. Unlike higher vertebrates, teleosts exhibit feeding behavior driven mainly by genetic responses, with no modification by learning from parents.
