Emergence of anomalous distributions in disordered systems.

The present day non-gaussian distribution of mass density of the universe evolved from an initial gaussian distribution in the presence of nonlinear interactions. We discuss an analog in disordered condensed matter system where increasing the disorder changes the distribution of conductances from a gaussian at weak disorder to a log-normal at strong disorder. The highly asymmetric "one-sided" log-normal distribution in the intermediate crossover regime can be understood as a simple hybrid of these two limiting distributions.

The non-Hermiticity gives rise to interesting pumping physics, owing to the presence of skin effect and exceptional points. Electromagnetic (EM) metamaterials represent a cutting-edge field that achieves anomalously macroscopic properties through artificial design and arrangement of microstructure arrays to freely manipulate EM fields and waves in desired ways. The unit cell of a microstructure array is also called a meta-atom, which can construct effective medium parameters that do not exist in traditional materials or are difficult to realize with traditional technologies. By deep integration with digital information, the meta-atom is evolved to a digital meta-atom, leading to the emergence of information metamaterials.

Evidence for a metal-bosonic insulator-superconductor transition in compressed sulfur.

The abrupt drop of resistance to zero at a critical temperature is a key signature of the current paradigm of the metal-superconductor transition. However, the emergence of an intermediate bosonic insulating state characterized by a resistance peak preceding the onset of the superconducting transition has challenged this traditional understanding. Notably, this phenomenon has been predominantly observed in disordered or chemically doped low-dimensional systems, raising intriguing questions about the generality of the effect and its underlying fundamental physics.

A man in his early 50s presented to the emergency department (ED) with sudden onset of palpitation and presyncope. The 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) recorded in ED showed monomorphic ventricular tachycardia requiring cardioversion in view of haemodynamic instability.
