Silver acetylides have been prepared and used in Pd-catalyzed coupling reactions. Enynes have thus been obtained in good yields. This work demonstrates that organosilver compounds could enter the Pd catalytic cycle; it also supports the role of silver acetylides as intermediates in the new Pd/Ag-catalyzed coupling reaction.

Ag compounds are considered strong oxidizers of difficult handling. Accordingly, the involvement of Ag catalysts in cross-coupling via 2e redox sequences is frequently discarded. Nevertheless, organosilver(III) compounds have been authenticated using tetradentate macrocycles or perfluorinated groups as supporting ligands, and since 2014, first examples of cross-coupling enabled by Ag /Ag redox cycles saw light.

Neutral Ag(III) complexes stabilised with just monodentate ligands are here unambiguously established. In a series of square-planar (CF)Ag(L) compounds with hard and soft Group 15 donor ligands, L, the metal center has been found to exhibit substantial acidity favouring apical coordination of an additional ligand under no coordination constraints.

Developing efficient strategies to synthesize spirocyclopenteneoxindoles is an attractive target due to their potential biological activity. This work described the thiourea/silver dual catalytic (3 + 2)/Conia-ene type reaction of 2-(2-oxoindolin-3-yl)malononitrile with -ethynyl substituted nitrostyrene. The reaction features mild conditions and good atom- and step-economy.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers have successfully isolated square-planar organosilver(III) compounds [PPh][trans-(CF)AgX] with X being Cl and Br, characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction.
  • The compounds 1a and 2a are identified as kinetically favored stereoisomers based on stability calculations and can associate with an additional ligand to form rare five-coordinate silver species.
  • Compound [PPh][(CF)AgBr] has been discovered as the first organosilver derivative showing trigonal symmetry and trigonal bipyramidal geometry, along with an inverted ligand field.
