A 42-year-old Vietnamese egg factory worker in Ishikawa prefecture, Japan, presented with itchy concentric erythema on the trunk and left calf. The lesions tested positive by direct potassium hydroxide examination, and two fungal strains were isolated. The isolates produced conidia abundantly and were morphologically indistinguishable from Trichophyton mentagrophytes/interdigitale, but were identified as Trichophyton indotineae by internal transcribed spacer sequence of ribosomal DNA.

Article Synopsis
  • The Trichophyton mentagrophytes complex includes dermatophyte fungi that cause skin infections, with a rising concern of drug resistance, especially in Trichophyton indotineae, which shows terbinafine resistance.
  • A study in Hue City, Vietnam analyzed these fungi's characteristics and antifungal susceptibilities, revealing that 24% of superficial mycoses were linked to this complex, predominantly identifying T. interdigitale genotype II.
  • While the fungi were generally sensitive to itraconazole and voriconazole, about 50% of T. indotineae isolates were resistant to terbinafine due to a specific mutation, highlighting the urgent need for better strategies to combat drug resistance in dermatology.

Scabies is a neglected tropical disease and represents a considerable global burden. Although consensus diagnostic criteria for scabies have been recently published, diagnosing scabies infestation remains challenging in clinical practice. We investigated the diagnostic utility of complete blood cell count (CBC) and CBC-derived ratios obtained at diagnosis in a set of 167 patients who are Vietnamese with confirmed scabies.

Background: Anecdotally, the burden of fungal diseases in Vietnam is rapidly rising, but there has been no updated estimate on this issue since a previous report in 2015.

Objectives: In this study, we aimed at estimating the incidence and prevalence of serious fungal infections for the year 2020.

Methods: We made estimates with a previously described methodology, using reports on the incidence and prevalence of various established risk factors for fungal infections from local, regional or global sources.

Article Synopsis
  • A newly identified species of dermatophytes, resistant to terbinafine, poses treatment challenges for dermatophytosis in Central Vietnam.
  • This is the first documented case of infection by this species in the region.
  • Antifungal tests indicated the isolate was susceptible to itraconazole and voriconazole, leading to successful treatment with oral itraconazole and topical ketoconazole.
