Biosorptive flotation for metal ions recovery.

Water Sci Technol

Chemistry Department, Aristotle University, GR-540 06 Thessaloniki, Greece.

Published: October 2001

The solid/liquid separation of suspended, metals-loaded biomass was studied extensively by successfully applying flotation. Industrial non-living biomass samples of different origin have been tried in the laboratory as sorbents of metal ions, with the main stress on Streptomyces rimosus, an effective actinomyces. Flotation was used as the harvesting technique downstream, following the biosorption stage. Important parameters of the investigation were the solution pH, the surfactant type and concentration, the applied modification of biomass, etc. The reuse and recycling of biosorbent following elution was proved possible. As a result cleaned water was produced as underflow of the flotation process.

A lateral flow assay (LFA) was developed for the simultaneous or separate detection of mercury ion and silver ion based on isothermal nucleic acid amplification. T-Hg-T and C-Ag-C were utilized in the isothermal nucleic acid amplification strategy to form specific complementary base pairs. Under the action of KF polymerase and endonuclease Nt.

Here, we developed a novel, cost-effective fluorescence light-up biosensor for Pb detection based on a label-free G-quadruplex combined with modified thioflavin T (ThT) derivatives. Among the various G-quadruplex sequences tested, only T2 exhibited fluorescence light-up properties upon interacting with the modified ThT derivatives in the presence of Pb. To enhance the Pb sensing system, we also compared modified ThT derivatives, including the newly synthesized propyl-substituted ThT (ThT-P) and butyl-substituted ThT (ThT-B).

Organic fluorescence and colorimetric probes have emerged as vital tools for detecting metal ions, due to their high sensitivity, selectivity, and rapid response times. Copper, an essential trace element, plays a critical role in biological systems, yet its imbalance can lead to severe disorders such as neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, and Wilson's disease. Over the past few years, advancements in probe design have unlocked innovative avenues for not only detecting Cu in environmental and biological samples but also for visualizing its distribution through fluorescence imaging.

Spin Chains with Highly Quantum Character through Strong Covalency in CaCrN.

J Am Chem Soc

Materials Department, University of California, Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, California 93106, United States.

The insulating transition metal nitride CaCrN consists of sheets of triangular [CrN] units with symmetry that are connected via quasi-1D zigzag chains. Due to strong covalency between Cr and N, Cr ions are unusually low-spin, and = 1/2. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal dominant quasi-1D spin correlations with very large nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange = 340 K and yet no sign of magnetic order down to = 0.
