Purpose: Earlier studies demonstrated that exposure, especially prenatal, of mammalians to cadmium (Cd) results in disorders of visual evoked potentials (FVEP). The purpose of this study is to find out any influence of cadmium intoxications on the effect of dopamine (DA) on FVEP.

Method: 18 Wistar albino rats in 3-6 months of age were divided into 3 groups: control (drinking tap water only), prenatal exposure of 5 ppm, and 50 ppm Cd. Flash visual evoked potentials (FVEP) were recorded before and after injections of dopamine (DA) 100 and 200 nmols into the lateral brain ventricle. The amplitude and latency of N1 and P2 were statistically analysed by the test of t-Student. p < 0.05 was used to indicate significant difference.

Results: There were no statistical differences of mean latency of P2 waves between initial records of FVEP and after both doses of DA in all observed groups. The amplitudes of both waves increased after DA injections compared to initial values in all groups. The differences were statistically significant. The mean latencies of N1 peak were prolonged after both DA doses (106-109%) compared to the initial records (100%) in the control group; however, there were no changes of it in the Cd-treated groups before and after DA injections.

Conclusion: Cadmium blocked the dopamine effect on the latencies of N1 and P2 of FVEP (because it prolonged them alone); however, cadmium increased the stimulative effect of dopamine on their amplitudes.

Optogenetic therapy is a promising vision restoration method where light sensitive opsins are introduced to the surviving inner retina following photoreceptor degeneration. The cell type targeted for opsin expression will likely influence the quality of restored vision. However, a like-for-like pre-clinical comparison of visual responses evoked following equivalent opsin expression in the two major targets, ON bipolar (ON BCs) or retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), is absent.

We employed high-resolution fMRI to distinguish the impacts of anisometropia and strabismus amblyopia on the evoked ocular dominance (OD) response. Sixteen amblyopic participants (8 females) plus 8 individuals with normal vision (1 female), participated in this study for whom, we measured the difference between the response to stimulation of the two eyes, across areas V1-V4.In controls, the evoked OD response formed the expected striped pattern within V1.

The purpose was to assess whether visual feedback of torque contributes to motor unit (MU) firing rate reduction observed during post-activation potentiation (PAP) of skeletal muscle. From 15 participants 23 MUs were recorded with intramuscular fine-wire electrodes from the tibialis anterior during isometric dorsiflexion contractions at 20% of maximum, with and without both PAP and visual feedback of torque. A 5s maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) was used to induce PAP, and evoked twitch responses were assessed before and after.

Background: Posterior laminectomy is a standard treatment for thoracic ossification of the ligamentum flavum (TOLF), but it often leads to neurological deterioration during surgery. This study aimed to reduce iatrogenic neurological deterioration by using an S8 navigation system combined with an ultrasonic osteotome for three-dimensional real-time dynamic visualization decompression.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients who underwent laminectomy and internal fixation for TOLF in our centre from January 2016 to January 2023.

High altitude (HA) exposure induces impairments in visual function. This study was designed to dynamically observe visual function after returning to lowland and elucidate the underlying mechanism by examining the structure and function of retina and visual pathway. Twenty-three subjects were recruited before (Test 1), and one week (Test 2) and three months (Test 3) after their return from HA (4300 m) where they resided for 30 days.
