The significance of ultrastructural changes in the gill epithelial cells as a parameter of detection of Hg exposure in the flat oyster, Ostrea edulis, was tested by a 34-day exposure to 5 microg l(-1) of Hg. The concentration of Hg (38.76 microg g(-1) dry weight) in gill tissue was maximal after 25 days and then decreased. The histological pattern of gill filaments in control samples did not vary throughout the experiment, except for the volume of mucocytes after 4 days of exposure, as an adaptation to experimental conditions. This volume increased significantly and then decreased according to the accumulation of Hg in the gills. After 18 days, absorptive and ciliated cells of the gill epithelium showed blebs in microvilli membranes, discocilia and swollen mitochondrial cristae. Both cell types showed distinct cellular lysis stages after 25 days of exposure. These are the target cells of Hg and other metals and the reported hypertrophy of mucocytes increase occurs in response to pollution by Hg, which could contribute to the detoxification process.

The rising production and improper disposal of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO NPs) into aquatic systems present considerable environmental challenges, especially when these particles interact with other contaminants such as cadmium (Cd). Thus, the current study aimed to evaluate the potential toxic effects on the gills, chondrocranium, body growth, and mortality of Aquarana catesbeiana tadpoles. The tadpoles were exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of TiO NPs (10 µg L), and CdCl (10 µg L), both individually and in combination, for 30 days (chronic exposure), along with a control group.

Myxobolus Bütschli, 1882 is a highly important genus of fish myxozoans, consisting of many species that cause serious diseases in ornamental cyprinid fish species in different geographic areas by infecting a wide range of organs. This study describes a new Myxobolus species infecting the gill lamellae, gill rakers and skin epidermis of goldfish (Carassius auratus) from Mohammadshahr, Iran, based on detailed morphological, histological and molecular analysis. Estuaries and lagoons are characterized by fluctuating salinity and significant amounts of microplastics (MPs) and are increasingly subjected to various anthropogenic pressures. We investigated whether the accumulation of MPs in the gills of fish inhabiting these fragile ecosystems alters osmoregulation and, consequently, their ability to tolerate fluctuating salinity. The effects of a 15-day exposure to an environmentally relevant concentration (20 μg/L) of spherical polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) with a diameter of 5 μm were assessed in the Mediterranean killifish Aphanius fasciatus, focusing on tissue and gene expression changes related to factors of paracellular and transcellular permeability of the gill epithelium during the transition from seawater to freshwater.

Aquatic organisms are simultaneously exposed to multiple hazardous chemicals that can be released into water bodies. The current study aimed to evaluate the effect of sublethal concentration (1/50 96 h-LC) of two formulated pesticides: ethoprophos, bispyribac-sodium, and their combination for 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks on oxidative stress, genotoxic response, and gill morphology in Nile tilapia. This study is the first to demonstrate the toxic effects of ethoprophos and bispyribac-sodium mixture on the commercial important species, Oreochromis niloticus.
