Introduction: Expression of somatostatin receptor subtype 2 (sst 2) in angiogenic tumor vessels appears to be homogeneous, while tumor cell expression of this receptor is often heterogeneous. We have developed a novel in vitro three-dimensional tumor angiogenesis model to study the antitumor and the antiangiogenic effects of radiolabeled somatostatin analogs. We hypothesized that targeted in situ radiation with an Auger electron-emitting radiolabeled somatostatin analog would produce receptor-specific cytotoxicity in sst 2-expressing cells.
Materials And Methods: IMR-32 human neuroblastoma (sst 2-positive) and MDA MB-231 human breast cancer (sst 2-negative) xenografts were created in nude mice from monolayer cell cultures. Fragments of these tumors were embedded in three-dimensional fibrin gels supplemented with endothelial growth media and incubated for a period of 14 days. Tumor fragments were treated with 50 microCi/ml of (111)In-JIC 2DL, a sst 2-preferring somatostatin analog, or medium on Day 1. Initial angiogenic activity was determined at 48 h and the mean angiogenic score and tumoricidal responses were assessed on Day 14.
Results And Conclusion: Tumoricidal effects of (111)In-JIC 2DL were seen only in sst 2-positive IMR-32 tumors. However, the angiogenic response was inhibited in both IMR-32 and MDA MB-231 tumors independent of the tumor cells' sst 2 status. Somatostatin receptor-mediated in situ radiation therapy has profound cytotoxic effects on angiogenic blood vessels and sst 2-expressing tumor cells.

The fabrications of circularly polarized luminescent (CPL) material are mainly based on the chemical and physical strategies. Controlled biosynthesis of CPL-active materials is beset with difficulties due to the lack of bioactive luminescent precursors and bio-reactors. Enlighted by microbe-assisted asymmetric biosynthesis, herein, we show the in situ bacterial fermentation of Komagataeibacter sucrofermentants to fabricate a series of bacterial cellulosic biofilms with CPL of green, orange, red, and near-infrared colors.

Microbial mats are stratified communities often dominated by unicellular and filamentous phototrophs within an exopolymer matrix. It is challenging to quantify the dynamic responses of community members in situ as they experience steep gradients and rapid fluctuations of light. To address this, we developed a binary consortium using two representative isolates from hot spring mats: the unicellular oxygenic phototrophic cyanobacterium OS-B' (Syn OS-B') and the filamentous anoxygenic phototroph MS-CIW-1 (Chfl MS-1).

Coordination-driven metallo-supramolecular polymers hold significant potential as highly efficient catalysts for photocatalytic CO reduction, owing to the covalent integration of the light harvesting unit, catalytic center and intrinsic hierarchical nanostructures. In this study, we present the synthesis, characterization, and gelation behaviour of a novel low molecular weight gelator (LMWG) integrating a benzo[1,2-:4,5-']dithiophene core with terpyridine (TPY) units alkyl amide chains (TPY-BDT). The two TPY ends of the TPY-BDT unit efficiently chelate with metal ions, enabling the formation of a metallo-supramolecular polymer that brings together the catalytic center and a photosensitizer in close proximity, maximizing catalytic efficiency for CO reduction.

Magnetic field effects (MFE) of ferromagnetic spin electrocatalysts have attracted significant attention due to their potential to enhance catalytic activity under an external magnetic field. However, no ferromagnetic spin catalysts have demonstrated MFE in the electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate for ammonia (NORR), a pioneering approach towards NH production involving the conversion from diamagnetic NO to paramagnetic NO. Here, we report the ferromagnetic Fe-TiO to investigate MFE on NORR.

Background: Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is overtreated, in part because of inability to predict which DCIS cases diagnosed at core needle biopsy (CNB) will be upstaged at excision. This study aimed to determine whether quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features can identify DCIS at risk of upstaging to invasive cancer.
Methods: This prospective observational clinical trial analyzed women with a diagnosis of DCIS on CNB.
