Circadian rhythms, endogenous rhythms with periods of approximately 24 h, are widespread in nature. Although plants have provided many examples of rhythmic outputs and our understanding of photoreceptors of circadian input pathways is well advanced, studies with plants have lagged in the identification of components of the central circadian oscillator. Nonetheless, genetic and molecular biological studies, primarily in Arabidopsis, have begun to identify the components of plant circadian systems at an accelerating pace. There also is accumulating evidence that plants and other organisms house multiple circadian clocks both in different tissues and, quite probably, within individual cells, providing unanticipated complexity in circadian systems.

In 2024, we observe the fortieth anniversary of the publication, where, for the first time, the term of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) was used. Presently, SAD is regarded as a special category of mood disorder. In the American Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition (DSM-V), the seasonality makes a specifier, "with seasonal pattern", both for recurrent depression or Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), and for Bipolar Disorder (BD).

Cellular senescence precipitates a decline in physiological activities and metabolic functions, often accompanied by heightened inflammatory responses, diminished immune function, and impaired tissue and organ performance. Despite extensive research, the mechanisms underpinning cellular senescence remain incompletely elucidated. Emerging evidence implicates circadian rhythm and hypoxia as pivotal factors in cellular senescence.

Study Objectives: Both the (ICSD) and the sleep-wake disorders section of the (DSM) emphasize the importance of clinical judgment in distinguishing the normal from the pathological in sleep medicine. The fourth edition of the DSM (DSM-IV, 1994) introduced the clinical significance criterion (CSC) to standardize this judgment and enhance diagnostic reliability.
Methods: This review conducts a theoretical and historical content analysis of CSC presence, frequency, and formulation in the diagnostic criteria of sleep disorders.
