Local microcirculatory disturbances and fibrosis are thought to contribute to the pathogenesis of erectile dysfunction (ED). The assessment of these disturbances is now possible using non-invasive techniques such as laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) and measuring transcutaneous pO2 and pCO2. However, these techniques need standardisation (e.g. in terms of equipment, conditions in which the examination is carried out and duration of measurement). Nevertheless, these techniques have a qualitative value. Marked alterations are seen in smokers and hypertensive patients. LDF has also been used to monitor the effect of treatment (e.g. after intracavernosal PGE1). These techniques remain non-diagnostic in individual patients. However, in groups of patients they may produce useful information (e.g. to assess treatments for ED).

Background: Angiography-derived microcirculatory resistance (AMR) is proposed as a novel, pressure- temperature-wire-free and less-invasive method to evaluate coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD). This study aims to examine the prognostic role of CMD assessed by AMR in predicting adverse events in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD).
Methods: This retrospective cohort study included ACS with CKD patients in the China-Japan Friendship Hospital from January 2016 to November 2022.

Background: The presence of hepatic steatosis (HS) is a crucial histological parameter for evaluating the suitability of liver transplantation. However, to date, no studies have used contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) to diagnose and grade HS in brain-dead donors. This study aimed to detect and quantify hepatic microcirculatory perfusion in brain-dead donors using CEUS and to assess the utility of CEUS in the diagnosis and grading of HS.

Introduction: Microcirculatory alterations are predictive of poor outcomes in patients with shock and after cardiac arrest in animal models. However, microcirculatory alterations during human cardiac arrest have not yet been studied.
Methods: We prospectively included adult patients receiving resuscitation after witnessed out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.

Objective: To determine if intermittent neuromuscular electrostimulation (NMES) of the common peroneal nerve increases microvascular flow and pulsatility in and around the wound bed of patients with combined venous and arterial etiology.
Methods: Seven consenting participants presenting with mixed etiology leg ulcers participated in this study. Microvascular flow and pulsatility was measured in the wound bed and in the skin surrounding the wound using laser speckle contrast imaging.

Background: High levels of catecholamines are cardiotoxic and associated with stress-induced cardiomyopathies. Septic patients are routinely exposed to endogenously released and exogenously administered catecholamines, which may alter cardiac function and perfusion causing ischemia. Early during human septic shock, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) decreases but normalizes in survivors over 7-10 days.
