Conservation studies on ornamental and building stones of north-eastern Sicily. Geomineralogical and porosimetric investigations.

Ann Chim

Dipartimento di Chimica Inorganica, Chimica Analitica e Chimica Fisica, Salita Sperone 31, 98166 S.Agata, Messina.

Published: May 2001

The effectiveness, as preserving agents, of a series of chemical compounds (silanes, siloxanes, epoxides, perfluoropolyethers, acrylates, acrylsilicones) has been tested on lithic materials mainly used in artistic stoneworks of north-eastern Sicily. The selection and classification of the stone types, based on geomineralogical criteria follows a brief excursus about their use as artistic materials. The results of the porosimetric investigations, before and after conservation treatments, are reported. In addition, polarizing mineralogical microscope photos of the studied lithoid materials are presented.

Background: The study of the timing of migration is fundamental to the understanding of the ecology of many bird species and their response to climate change, and it has important conservation and management implications e.g., for assessing the hunting seasons according to the EU Directive 2009/147/EC (Birds Directive).

Salivary Biomarkers Analysis and Neurobehavioral Assessment in Nurses Working Rotation Shifts: A Pilot Study.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

April 2023

Department of Biomedical and Dental Sciences, Morphological and Functional Imaging, Section of Occupational Medicine, University of Messina, 98125 Messina, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • About 20% of workers in Europe are employed in night shift jobs, which are crucial in sectors like healthcare but may lead to sleep disorders and increased work-related stress.
  • A pilot study involving 102 nurses in North-Eastern Sicily collected morning and evening salivary samples and administered psychological questionnaires to assess stress biomarkers and neurobehavioral issues.
  • Findings revealed a link between higher morning cortisol levels and depression and lower alpha-amylase levels with reduced work ability, suggesting that combining subjective and objective assessments can help identify at-risk workers and improve preventive strategies for night shift employees.

Processionary caterpillar reactions in Southern Italy forestry workers: description of three cases.

Clin Mol Allergy

September 2021

Department of Biomedical Sciences, Dental, Morphological and Functional Investigations, University of Messina, Via Consolare Valeria 1, 98124, Messina, Italy.

Background: Processionary caterpillar (PC), also named Thaumatopea pityocampa, has been reported to cause hypersensitivity reactions after contact with a toxin contained in hair-like bristles which cover this insect. Occupational exposure to PC is underestimated in outdoor workers and especially in forestry workers (FW) and is globally diffusing because of rising temperatures.

Cases Presentation: We present the first three cases of FW from Sicily, a Southern Italy (SI) region, which reported hypersensitivity reactions due to exposure to PC infested trees.

Natural Radioactivity of the Crystalline Basement Rocks of the Peloritani Mountains (North-Eastern Sicily, Italy): Measurements and Radiological Hazard.

Radiat Prot Dosimetry

November 2020

Dipartimento di Scienze Matematiche e Informatiche, Scienze Fisiche e Scienze della Terra (MIFT), Università di Messina, 98166 Messina, Italy.

Crystalline rocks can produce dangerous radiation levels on the basis of their content in radioisotopes. Here, we report radiological data from 10 metamorphic and igneous rock samples collected from the crystalline basement of the Peloritani Mountains (southern Italy). In order to evaluate the radiological properties of these rocks, the gamma radiation and the radon emanation have been measured.

Objectives: In Italy, a recent irregular movement of people raised concerns among the host population on possible introduction of diseases that have long been controlled in the host countries. This study evaluates the health conditions of illegal immigrants landed on the north-eastern Sicilian territory, to provide information on the clinical and epidemiologic burden of infectious diseases among migrants and how the local population feel about these landings.

Study Design: The study design is a cross-sectional study.
