Methylmalonyl-CoA epimerase (MMCE) is an enzyme that interconverts the R and S epimers of methylmalonyl-CoA in the pathway that links propionyl-CoA with succinyl-CoA. This is used for both biosynthetic and degradative processes, including the breakdown of odd-numbered fatty acids and some amino acids. The enzyme has been expressed in Escherichia coli both as the native enzyme and as its selenomethionine (SeMet) derivative. Crystals of both forms have been obtained by vapour diffusion using monomethylether PEG 2000 as precipitant. The native MMCE crystals are orthorhombic, with unit-cell parameters a = 56.0, b = 114.0, c = 156.0 A, and the SeMet-MMCE crystals are monoclinic, with unit-cell parameters a = 43.6, b = 78.6, c = 89.4 A, beta = 92.0 degrees; both diffract to better than 2.8 A resolution.

The crystallographic phase change from tetragonal litharge (α-PbO; P4/nmm) to orthorhombic massicot (β-PbO; Pbcm) has been studied by full-matrix Rietveld analysis of high-temperature neutron powder diffraction data collected in equal steps from ambient temperature up to 925 K and back down to 350 K. The phase transformation takes place between 850 and 925 K, with the coexisting phases having equal abundance by weight at 885 K. The product massicot remains metastable on cooling to near ambient temperature.

This is not conducive to the integrated design of the metasurface. To address the problem, a miniaturization design method based on genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed.

During the heat treatment of round steel bars, a heated charge in the form of a cylindrically formed bundle is placed in a furnace. This type of charge is a porous granular medium in which a complex heat flow occurs during heating. The following heat transfer mechanisms occur simultaneously in this medium: conduction in bars, conduction within the gas, thermal radiation between the surfaces of the bars, and contact conduction across the joints between the adjacent bars.

This paper focuses on the theoretical and analytical modeling of a novel seismic isolator termed the Passive Friction Mechanical Metamaterial Seismic Isolator (PFSMBI) system, which is designed for seismic hazard mitigation in multi-story buildings. The PFSMBI system consists of a lattice structure composed of a series of identical small cells interconnected by layers made of viscoelastic materials. The main function of the lattice is to shift the fundamental natural frequency of the building away from the dominant frequency of earthquake excitations by creating low-frequency bandgaps (FBGs) below 20 Hz.

High-pressure and low-temperature structural changes in the ferroelectric phase of (R)-3-quinuclidinol are analysed. The changes in unit-cell volume and parameters are continuous both on cooling and under increasing pressure. The anisotropy of the structural strain, however, is found to be different.
