Rationale: The use of benzimidazole-class novel psychoactive substances has significantly increased worldwide raising concerns about potential misuse and doping in animal sports such as camel racing. Understanding the metabolism of these substances is critical for developing reliable detection methods to ensure fair competition and animal welfare.

Methods: In vitro studies were conducted using homogenized camel liver samples to replicate metabolic processes.

Behind the scenes of EQA-characteristics, capabilities, benefits and assets of external quality assessment (EQA).

Clin Chem Lab Med

January 2025

Canadian Microbiology Proficiency Testing Program (CMPT), Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada.

The main stakeholders in external quality assessment (EQA) programs are the participants, in whose interests these challenges are ultimately organised. EQA schemes in the medical field contribute to improving the quality of patient care by evaluating the analytical and diagnostic quality of laboratory and point-of-care tests (POCT) by independent third parties and, if necessary, pointing out erroneous measurement results and analytical or diagnostic improvement potential. Other benefits include the option of using EQA samples for other important laboratory procedures, such as the verification or validation of diagnostic medical devices (IVD-MDs), a contribution to the estimation of measurement uncertainty, a means of training and educating laboratory staff through educational EQA programmes or samples, or even for independent and documented monitoring of staff competence, such as on samples with unusual or even exceptional characteristics.

DNA methylation modifications are an important mechanism affecting the process of atherosclerosis (AS). Previous studies have shown that Galectin-8 (GAL8) DNA methylation level is associated with sudden death of coronary heart disease or acute events of coronary heart disease. However, the mechanism of GAL8 DNA methylation and gene expression in AS has not been elucidated, prompting us to carry out further research on it.

Self-Assembly of Homo Phenylalanine Oligopeptides: Role of Oligopeptide Chain Length.

Langmuir

January 2025

Biomimetic Materials and Tissue Engineering Laboratory, Department of Chemical Engineering, University of South Carolina, Columbia, South Carolina 29208, United States.

The self-assembly of phenylalanine (F)-based peptides is a critical area of research with potential implications for the development of advanced biomaterials and technologies. Previous studies indicate that homo-oligopeptides with F-X residues (X = 1 to 6) can self-assemble into diverse nano-microstructures, but the role of oligopeptide chain length on this process remains unclear. This review investigates the role of F-X chain length on self-assembly processes and morphologies, considering the effect of incubation conditions and the capping group at the N and/or C terminals.

Background: Road traffic accidents (RTAs) are a critical public health problem leading to significant morbidity, mortality, and socioeconomic losses. Despite known risk factors like substance use and sleep-related problems, there is limited research on the prevalence of these factors among drivers who met with RTAs. Hence, this study aimed to gain insight into the prevalence of substance use and sleep-related problems among this population attending a trauma center in the northern State of India.
