The carbonyl-carbon kinetic isotope effect (KIE) and the substituent effect were measured for the reaction of phenylthiomethyllithium (PhSCH(2)Li, 1) with benzaldehyde and benzophenone, and cyanomethyllithium (NCCH(2)Li, 2) with benzaldehyde, and the results were compared with those for other lithium reagents such as MeLi, PhLi, CH(2)=CHCH(2)Li, and CH(2)=C(OLi)C(CH(3))(3). It was previously shown that the reactions of MeLi, PhLi, and CH(2)=CHCH(2)Li proceed via a rate-determining electron transfer (ET) process whereas the reaction of lithium pinacolone enolate goes through the polar (PL) mechanism. The reaction of 1 with benzaldehyde gave no carbonyl-carbon KIE ((12)k/(13)k = 0.999 +/- 0.004), similar to that measured previously for the MeLi reaction with benzophenone ((12)k/(14)k = 1.000). The effect of substituents of the aromatic ring of benzaldehyde and benzophenone on the reactivity gave very small Hammett rho values of 0.17 +/- 0.03 and 0.26 +/- 0.05, respectively. These small rho values are again similar to that observed for the reaction of MeLi. Likewise the reactions of 2 with benzaldehydes gave small KIE and the rho value ((12)k/(13)k = 0.996 +/- 0.004, rho = 0.14 +/- 0.02). Dehalogenation and enone-isomerization probe experiments for 2 showed no evidence for the presence of radical-ion pair of sufficient lifetime during the course of the reaction. It is concluded that the reactions of 1 and 2 with the aromatic carbonyl compounds proceed via the electron transfer-radical coupling mechanism with rate-determining ET as in the reactions of MeLi, PhLi, and CH(2)=CHCH(2)Li.

Synthesis and Reactivity of a Bipyridyl Tantalum Complex.

Inorg Chem

January 2025

Testing and Analysis Center, Hebei Normal University, Shijiazhuang 050024, China.

The bipyridyl tantalum complex (2,6-PrCHO)Ta(bipy) () is synthesized by the reaction of (2,6-PrCHO)TaCl () and 2,2'-bipyridine in the presence of excess potassium graphite (KC). Complex coordinates readily with pyridine and 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine (dmap) to form Lewis base adducts (2,6-PrCHO)Ta(bipy)(L) (L = py (), dmap ()), and it exhibits rich redox reactivity toward small molecules: (a) single electron transfer (SET) occurs upon exposure of to phenyl sulfide or selenide dimer, giving the open-shell, bipy-centered radical complexes (2,6-PrCHO)Ta(bipy)(PhE) (E = S (), Se ()). (b) Regioselective C-C σ-bond formation via radical coupling is observed in the SET reaction of and aldehydes, ketones, or imines to furnish insertion products -, namely, sterically more crowded benzophenone, acetophenone, 2,6-dichlorobenzaldehyde, and benzophenone imine couple with C6 or C6' of bipy in , respectively, whereas sterically less hindered benzaldehyde, cyclohexanone, and benzylideneaniline couple with C2 or C2' of bipy, respectively.

Organic UV filters like oxybenzone (BP3) in sunscreens are seawater pollutants suspected to transfer to the atmosphere via sea spray aerosol (SSA). This study examines the photoinitiated degradation of BP3 in artificial and real seawater compared to SSA mimics containing NaCl and 4-benzoylbenzoic acid (4-BBA). We investigated pure, binary, and ternary mixtures of BP3, NaCl, and 4-BBA using solar-simulated light to isolate the effects of salt and photosensitization on BP3 degradation.

Biodegradation and Decolorization of Crystal Violet Dye by Cocultivation with Fungi and Bacteria.

ACS Omega

February 2024

Key Laboratory of Space Bioscience and Biotechnology, School of Life Sciences, Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xi'an 710072, China.

Microbial degradation of dyes is vital to understanding the fate of dyes in the environment. In this study, a fungal strain A-3 and a bacterial strain L-6, which were identified as and , respectively, had been proven to efficiently degrade crystal violet (CV) dye. The decolorization of CV dye by fungal and bacterial cocultivation was investigated.

Divergent Reactivity of a Cyclic Bis-Hydridostannylene: A Masked Sn(I) Diradicaloid.

Chemistry

April 2024

Molecular Inorganic Chemistry and Catalysis, Inorganic and Structural Chemistry, Center for Molecular Materials, Faculty of Chemistry, Universität Bielefeld, Universitätsstrasse 25, D-33615, Bielefeld, Germany.

Herein, reactivity studies of a cyclic bis-hydridostannylene [(ADC)SnH] (1-H) (ADC=PhC{(NDipp)C}; Dipp=2,6-iPrCH) with various unsaturated organic substrates are reported. Reactions of terminal alkynes (RC≡CH) with 1-H afford mixed acetylide-vinyl-functionalized bis-stannylenes via dehydrogenation and hydrostannylation. Treatment of 1-H with PhC≡CCH gives a unique distannabarrelene via dehydrogenative C-H stannylation and hydrostannylation of the C≡CCH moiety.

Background: New cyclohexenone derivatives candidates were designed to discover their antioxidant and antibacterial activity potentials, respectively.

Methods: Aldehydes with the diverse functional group were prepared from 4-hydroxy benzaldehyde and benzyl bromide and converted to chalcones by reaction with 4-substituted benzophenones and 2-acetyl naphthalene. When chalcone derivatives were subjected to ethyl acetoacetate, it produced new cyclohexenone derivatives through NaOH- catalyzed addition-ring closure reaction.
