Objective: To report on the use of a new bandage contact lens (BCL) for a leaking filtering bleb.
Patients And Methods: A hollow BCL, with an internal central opening of 6 mm, has been applied on three eyes that had leaking blebs shortly after either trabeculectomy or combined cataract extraction and trabeculectomy, each with a fornix-based conjunctival flap.
Results: The treatment with this lens was found beneficial: the leakage subsided and the patients were comfortable with the lens. The internal hollow of the BCL enabled us to monitor the intraocular pressure throughout the entire follow-up period without transient and repeated removal of the BCL.
Conclusion: The new hollow BCL was found efficacious. The study suggests that this lens may have advantages over the commonly used BCLs that are related to the elimination of the need for its frequent removal and reinsertion for tonometry. This decreases the risk of both the exposure of the lens and the filtering bleb to contamination and the interference with the continuity of the process of conjunctival epithelial closure.

Innovative silica nanomaterials have made the significant advancements in curative therapy against cancers with multidrug resistance (MDR). The study on different-nanostructured mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) with discrepant pore sizes affecting biomacromolecules in resisting cancer MDR hasn't been reported yet. In this study, a systematic comparison of 6 nm-pore sized hollow-structured MSNs (HMSNs) and 10 nm-pore sized dendrimers-structured MSNs (LMSNs) for delivering Bcl-2-functional converting peptide (N9) or doxorubicin (DOX) to overcome cancer MDR is comprehensively carried out both in in vitro and in vivo resistant tumor models.

In this study, the nano-assemblies of bovine casein hydrolyzed peptides (HP) modified by fatty acids with various alkyl chain lengths (C8, C10, C12 and C14) were synthesized. The physicochemical properties of HP-C-HP-C nano-assemblies were characterized using spectra, laser particle size analyzer, contact angle meter, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and cryo-transmission electron microscope (Cryo-TEM). HP-C and HP-C self-assembled into a hollow cube cage with an average size of ~500 nm, and the assembly of HP-C showed a flower-shaped morphology with more dispersed behavior, and droplet size was observed as ~20 nm.

Pyroptosis, systemic inflammation, and mitochondrial apoptosis are the three primary contributors to sepsis's multiple organ failure, the ultimate cause of high clinical mortality. Currently, the drugs under development only target a single pathogenesis, which is obviously insufficient. In this study, an acid-responsive hollow mesoporous polydopamine (HMPDA) nanocarrier that is highly capable of carrying both the hydrophilic drug NAD and the hydrophobic drug BAPTA-AM, with its outer layer being sealed by the inflammatory targeting peptide PEG-LSA, is developed.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a serious central nervous system disease, and secondary injury, including oxidative stress, the inflammatory response and accompanying neuronal apoptosis, will aggravate the condition. Due to the existence of the blood-spinal cord barrier (BSCB), the existing drugs for SCI treatment are difficulty to reach the injury site and thus their efficacy is limited. In this study, we designed chitosan-modified hollow manganese dioxide nanoparticles (CM) for the delivery of resveratrol to help it pass through the BSCB.

We investigated the mechanisms leading to the specific recognition of Guanine Guadruplex (G4) by DARPins peptides, which can lead to the design of G4 s specific sensors. To this end we carried out all-atom molecular dynamic simulations to unravel the interactions between specific nucleic acids, including human-telomeric (h-telo), Bcl-2, and c-Myc, with different peptides, forming a DARPin/G4 complex. By comparing the sequences of DARPin with that of a peptide known for its high affinity for c-Myc, we show that the recognition cannot be ascribed to sequence similarity but, instead, depends on the complementarity between the three-dimensional arrangement of the molecular fragments involved: the α-helix/loops domain of DARPin and the G4 backbone.
