Monolayer-protected Au clusters (MPCs) have been prepared with mixed monolayers of alkanethiolates and alkanethiolates terminally omega-functionalized with phenothiazine. The mixed monolayer MPCs can contain as many as 10 phenothiazines/MPC; these electron donors are electroactive in rapid, successive one-electron reactions. Surface adsorption of the functionalized MPCs is evident in cyclic voltammetry. Double-potential-step chronocoulometry with incremented potential steps was applied to unfunctionalized hexanethiolate-coated MPCs and to those functionalized with phenothiazine to analyze the coupling between the diffusion-controlled double-layer charging of the MPC cores and the oxidation of the phenothiazine centers. Apparent changes in ordering of the MPC alkanethiolate chains were observed with infrared spectroscopy in solutions of MPCs where alcohol, carboxylic acid, or phenothiazine moieties had been incorporated into the monolayer.

Gradient porous carbon has become a potential electrode material for energy storage devices, including the aqueous zinc-ion hybrid capacitor (ZIHC). Compared with the sufficient studies on the fabrication of ZIHCs with high electrochemical performance, there is still lack of in-depth understanding of the underlying mechanisms of gradient porous structure for energy storage, especially the synergistic effect of ultramicropores (<1 nm) and micropores (1-2 nm). Here, we report a design principle for the gradient porous carbon structure used for ZIHC based on the data-mining machine learning (ML) method.

Magnetotransport of conventional semiconductor based double layer systems with barrier suppressed interlayer tunneling has been a rewarding subject due to the emergence of an interlayer coherent state that behaves as an excitonic superfluid. Large angle twisted bilayer graphene offers unprecedented strong interlayer Coulomb interaction, since both layer thickness and layer spacing are of atomic scale and a barrier is no more needed as the twist induced momentum mismatch suppresses tunneling. The extra valley degree of freedom also adds richness.

Article Synopsis
  • Using alternating currents (AC) can effectively prevent the formation of mineral crystals on surfaces in contact with super-saturated fluids, such as heat exchangers and pipes.
  • The study demonstrates that periodic charging and discharging of the electrical double layer (EDL) on titanium sheets in super-saturated CaCO solutions inhibits both crystal nucleation and growth due to enhanced ion migration.
  • Operating at 4 V and frequencies between 0.1-10 Hz results in over 96% reduction in turbidity and over 92% reduction in calcium carbonate coverage, showcasing a promising method for controlling mineral scaling in various industrial applications.

To elucidate interfacial dynamics during electrocatalytic reactions, it is crucial to understand the adsorption behavior of organic molecules on catalytic electrodes within the electric double layer (EDL). However, the EDL structure in aqueous environments remains intricate when it comes to the electrochemical amination of acetone, using methylamine as a nitrogen source. Specifically, the interactions of acetone and methylamine with the copper electrode in water remain unclear, posing challenges in the prediction and optimization of reaction outcomes.

Direct harvesting of abundant solar thermal energy within organic phase-change materials (PCMs) has emerged as a promising way to overcome the intermittency of renewable solar energy and pursue high-efficiency heating-related applications. Organic PCMs, however, generally suffer from several common shortcomings including melting-induced leakage, poor solar absorption, and low thermal conductivity. Compounding organic PCMs with single-component carbon materials faces the difficulty in achieving optimized comprehensive performance enhancement.
