Published: November 2000

Background: The objective of this paper was to demonstrate that the grafts of cervical splenic transplantation on rats using our experimental model present a normal histological appearance.

Methods: Isogenic consanguineous Lewis rats 12 weeks old and weighing 250 gr. were used. Histological findings of a group of 25 cervical splenic grafts transplanted by means of splinting vascular venous microanastomoses and a group of 25 splenic grafts autotransplanted in the omentum were compared with a control group. The specimens were assigned according to a score of 0 to 4, following Moore's histological criteria.

Results: All grafts in transplanted and autotransplanted groups had a score of 3 or 4. Then, all splenic grafts from the transplanted group had histological findings very similar to a normal spleen. In the autotransplantation group, the percentage of grafts with a score 3 (60%) was superior to the transplantation group (46%). However, the transplantation group presented a percentage of score 4 (54%), superior to the autotransplantation group (40%).

Conclusions: In our study all grafts from the cervical spleen transplantation group had histological findings very similar to a normal spleen. The percentage of spleens with histological normality in the transplantation group was superior to the autotransplantation group. However, there was no statistical significance.

Background: Immersive virtual reality (iVR) has emerged as a training method to prepare medical first responders (MFRs) for mass casualty incidents (MCIs) and disasters in a resource-efficient, flexible, and safe manner. However, systematic evaluations and validations of potential performance indicators for virtual MCI training are still lacking.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate whether different performance indicators based on visual attention, triage performance, and information transmission can be effectively extended to MCI training in iVR by testing if they can discriminate between different levels of expertise.

This prospective, observational cohort study compares the clinical and radiographic outcomes of the modified Weaver and Dunn (WD) technique with the newer, anatomical double-button plus tendon allograft technique (DB), and the suture anchor repair plus tendon allograft (SA). The study cohort includes 53 patients, who underwent surgery for acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) dislocation Rockwood type 3, 4 and 5. Patient-reported outcome scores and clinical results, including Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH), the Subjective Shoulder Value (SSV), the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and the Constant score (CS) results as well as loss of reduction rates on plain radiographs were compared.

Many options are available concerning the graft fixation in ACL reconstruction, one of them being a suspensory device. Our study aimed to compare the strength of two different devices of fixation (suspensory device vs screw) on the tibia. We enrolled 80 patients older than 18 years with an isolated ACL tear confirmed at the MRI, divided into two comparative groups for a prospective study.

Background: The oocyte retrieval is a critical step in assisted reproductive technologies, including in vitro fertilization and fertility preservation. Despite evolving techniques, the optimal aspiration pressure during retrieval remains debatable, with limited in vivo human studies. Existing studies, primarily in vitro and on animals, suggest that inappropriate aspiration pressures can impair oocyte quality.

Supporting equitable access to kidney transplant in remote Western Australia using continuous quality improvement.

Int J Qual Health Care

January 2025

Kimberley Renal Services, PO Box 1377, Broome, Western Australia 6725, Australia.

Background: Despite an epidemic of end-stage kidney disease in the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population, disparities in access to kidney transplantation persist. The journey to a successful kidney transplant is long, with an initial suitability assessment required before waitlist-specific activities begin. In an Aboriginal Community Controlled renal service, we aimed to: (i) design and implement a continuous quality improvement (CQI) approach to transplant suitability assessment, (ii) provide transplant suitability assessments for all patients of the service, (iii) describe what temporary contraindications to kidney transplantation should be the focus of health service improvements, (iv) explore participant experiences with the suitability assessment process, and (v) use our findings to inform pre- and post-transplant model of care development within Kimberley Renal Services.
