Objective: To determine whether circulating levels of insulin-like growth factors and their binding proteins are altered in patients with adult onset rheumatoid arthritis.
Methods: Plasma-levels of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), IGF-II, IGF-binding-protein 2 (IGFBP-2), and IGFBP-3 were measured by radioimmunoassay in 53 patients with clinically active rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and in 51 control subjects.
Results: In RA patients plasma levels of IGF-II were lower (601 +/- 34 vs. 731 +/- 32 micrograms/L (mean +/- SEM); p = 0.005; Mann-Whitney rank sum test) than in age- and sex-matched controls (n = 30 per group). In contrast, plasma levels of IGFBP-2 (412 +/- 40 vs. 254 +/- 20 micrograms/L; p = 0.003) and IGFBP-3 were elevated in RA patients (3.34 +/- 0.19 vs. 2.87 +/- 0.21 mg/L; p = 0.019) as compared with the matched controls. The molar ratio of IGF-I to IGFBP-3 was significantly reduced in subjects with RA (0.18 +/- 0.01 vs. 0.24 +/- 0.02; p = 0.008). Furthermore, in RA patients plasma levels of IGFBP-2 were positively (r = 0.45), and levels of IGF-2 negatively (r = -0.45) correlated with circulating levels of C-reactive protein (p < 0.01 in both cases; Spearman rank correlation).
Conclusion: Increased levels of IGFBPs in RA may result in the reduced availability of free IGFs that can bind to IGF receptors. The observed changes in the IGF system may thus participate in the catabolic processes in rheumatoid arthritis.

Background: Glioblastoma is an aggressive brain cancer with a 5-year survival rate of 5-10%. Current therapeutic options are limited, due in part to drug exclusion by the blood-brain barrier, restricting access of targeted drugs to the tumor. The receptor for the type 1 insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1R) was identified as a therapeutic target in glioblastoma.

Purpose: To assess the sensitivity and specificity of the retinopathy of prematurity score (ROPScore) and weight, insulin-like growth factor-1, retinopathy of prematurity algorithm in predicting the risk of developing severe retinopathy of prematurity (prethreshold type 1) in a sample of preterm infants in Brazil.
Methods: Retrospective analysis of medical records of preterm infants (n=288) with birth weight of ≤1500 g and/or gestational age of 23-32 weeks in a neonatal unit in Southern Brazil from May 2013 to December 2020 (92 months).
Results: The incidence of confirmed severe retinopathy of prematurity was 6.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a frequent clinical complication lacking early diagnostic tests and effective treatments. Novel biomarkers have shown promise for enabling earlier detection, risk stratification, and guiding management of AKI. We conducted a systematic review to synthesize evidence on the efficacy of novel biomarkers for AKI detection and management.

We evaluated the effects of breed and mineral source on heifer performance during periods of nutrient restriction and grazing. On day -7, ½ Angus × ½ Nelore (ANE) and Nelore (NE) heifers (12 heifers per breed; body weight, BW = 264 ± 35 kg; age = 15 ± 1 mo) were assigned to individual drylot pens to receive ad libitum Tifton 85 (Cynodon sp.) hay and white salt for 7 days.
