Anti-Bredt alkenes, bicyclic molecules that contain a bridgehead double bond, were for many years regarded as chemical curiosities. The type 2 intramolecular Diels-Alder (IMDA) reaction provides a one-step entry into this fascinating class of molecules. The reaction has made available numerous anti-Bredt alkenes for structural and chemical studies. X-ray crystallography has revealed the magnitude of the deformations associated with the bridgehead double bond, and rate studies of reactions of bridgehead alkenes have allowed quantification of the kinetic consequences of the torsional distortions. More recently, the type 2 intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction and the resulting anti-Bredt alkenes have found application in organic synthesis. The constraints resulting from the connectivity in the Diels-Alder precursor creates a strong regio- and stereochemical bias in the cycloaddition step. The end result of this bias is the stereoselective synthesis of highly substituted six-membered rings. The reaction also achieves a facile synthesis of seven- and eight-membered rings in a single step from acyclic precursors. The utility of this reaction has been verified in recent applications of the type 2 IMDA reaction as a key step in the total synthesis of complex natural products.

In 2001, Tang's team discovered a unique type of luminogens with substantial enhanced fluorescence upon aggregation and introduced the concept of "aggregation-induced emission (AIE)". Unlike conventional fluorescent materials, AIE luminogens (AIEgens) emit weak or no fluorescence in solution but become highly fluorescent in aggregated or solid states, due to a mechanism known as restriction of intramolecular motions (RIM). Initially considered a purely inorganic chemical phenomenon, AIE was later applied in biomedicine to improve the sensitivity of immunoassays.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) using traditional type II photosensitizers (PSs) has been limited in hypoxic tumors due to excessive oxygen consumption. The conversion from type II into a less oxygen-dependent type I PDT pathway has shown the potential to combat hypoxic tumors. Herein, the design of a heterodimeric PS, NBSSe, by conjugating a widely used type I PS NBS and a type II PS NBSe via molecular dimerization, achieving the aggregation-regulated efficient type I photodynamic conversion for the first time is reported.

The final outcomes of supramolecular assembly are determined by the pathways and the formation of intermediates during the assembly process. We studied pathway complexity involving two consecutive pathways in supramolecular polymerization of naphthalene-diimide (NDI) derivative molecule. Depending on preparation methods anisotropic aggregates of J-type nanorods (Agg I) or more flexible H-type nanofibers (Agg II) are obtained from the identical initial state in solution of methyl cyclohexane (MCH) or MCH/CHCl3 mixtures.

A method for preparing the fused cyclohexane and pyrrolidine portion of the strychnos skeleton has been developed using domino intermolecular and intramolecular S2 cyclization. Using this method, the formation of pyrrolidine proceeded smoothly with good yield without the E2 elimination product. This reaction condition is effective for synthesizing the fused cyclohexane and pyrrolidine portion of the strychnos skeleton.

Human serum albumin (HSA) is a key protein implicates in various physiological and pathological conditions such as renal injury, diabetes mellitus. Herein, we report an AIE-active fluorescent probe (DNI-4) for detection of HSA with a "turn on" response covering visible and near-infrared region (500 - 800 nm). Combining with a triphenylamine and two 1,8-naphthalimide moieties, the chromophore segment of DNI-4 forms a "A-D-A" type molecular architecture with the twisted intramolecular charge transfer property.
