Published: December 2000

We studied the effects of the androgenic hormone, androsterone sulfate, a 17-ketosteroid, on long term potentiation in the dentate gyrus (DG) of urethane anesthesized rats. Intravenous injection of 10 mg of the hormone dissolved in Nutralipid produced a significant increase of the population spike (PS), but not of the excitatory post-synaptic potentials (EPSP). The results are discussed in terms of the potential enhancement that androsterone sulfate may have on memory as was described for one of its parent compounds, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and its potential use as an antidepressant.

Metabolic profiles of meconium in preeclamptic and normotensive pregnancies.

Introduction: Preeclampsia (PE) is a common vascular pregnancy disorder affecting maternal and fetal metabolism with severe immediate and long-term consequences in mothers and infants. During pregnancy, metabolites in the maternal circulation pass through the placenta to the fetus. Meconium, a first stool of the neonate, offers a view to maternal and fetoplacental unit metabolism and could add to knowledge on the effects of PE on the fetus and newborn.

Improving the Determination of Carbon Isotope Ratios of Endogenous Steroids Found in Human Serum.

The determination of serum concentrations of testosterone (T) and 4-androstenedione (A4) was implemented into the steroidal module of the Athlete Biological Passport in 2023. Monitoring T, A4, and the ratio of T/A4 in a longitudinal manner enables the detection of the misuse of low-dose T administrations especially in female athletes, whereas urinary markers of the steroid profile may not be influenced significantly. In contrast to the urinary steroid profile, knowledge on confounding factors regarding serum concentrations of T and A4 is yet comparably scarce, and corroborating exogenous sources of the target analytes by isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) is desirable.

Associations between serum metabolites and female cancers: A bidirectional two-sample mendelian randomization study.

Female cancers, especially breast, ovarian, cervical, and endometrial cancers, constitute a major threat to women's health worldwide. In view of the complex genetic background of cancers cannot be fully explained with current genetic information, we used a bidirectional two-sample mendelian randomization approach to explore the causal associations between serum metabolites and four major female cancers-breast, ovarian, cervical, and endometrial cancers. We analyzed the metabolites dataset from the Canadian Longitudinal Study of Aging and cancer datasets from the 10th round of the Finngen project.

The causal relationship of human blood metabolites with the components of Sarcopenia: a two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis.

Key Laboratory of Molecular Epidemiology of Hunan Province, School of Medicine, Hunan Normal University, 371 Tongzipo Road, Yuelu District, 410013, Changsha, Hunan, China.

Background: Sarcopenia is a progressive loss of muscle mass and function. Since skeletal muscle plays a critical role in metabolic homeostasis, identifying the relationship of blood metabolites with sarcopenia components would help understand the etiology of sarcopenia.

Methods: A two-sample Mendelian randomization study was conducted to examine the causal relationship of blood metabolites with the components of sarcopenia.

Physical weakness and cardiovascular risk increase significantly with age, but the underlying biological mechanisms remain largely unknown. This study aims to reveal the causal effect of circulating metabolites on frailty, sarcopenia and vascular aging related traits and diseases through a two-sample Mendelian Randomization (MR) analysis. Exposures were 486 metabolites analyzed in a genome-wide association study (GWAS), while outcomes included frailty, sarcopenia, arterial stiffness, atherosclerosis, peripheral vascular disease (PAD) and aortic aneurysm.
