The purpose of the present study was to comprehensively assess goiter endemia in Kuzbass. The spread of goiter was examined in its population. The severity and intensity of goiter endemia were assessed. Its causes and risk factors were revealed. The Kemerovo region was found to be an area of moderate goiter endemia with a tendency for its severity. In developed countries, the use of iodised salt represents the best prophylaxis of endemic goitre in areas exposed to iodine deficiency. In the present study we re-evaluated goitre prevalence and iodine intake 10 years after the introduction of iodised salt in an area of goitre endemia in north-eastern Sicily (Italy), and we compared these results with those obtained in previous surveys. Three centres with known moderate goitre endemia (Bronte, Nicosia, and Gagliano) and three other smaller ones with severe goitre endemia (Sperlinga, Villadoro, and Maniace) were studied.

Background: In 1984, Yu Zhiheng proposed the "U-curve" regularity between urinary iodine (UI) and goiter prevalence (GP). However, along with the adjustment of salt iodine and iodine deficiency disorders (IDD), and surveys followed, some defects were found in the research. As a result, it is time to test and enrich the theory as a series of large sample survey data from China would be helpful.
