Aim: To evaluate the effects of the flavonoids extracted from the Semen Cuscutae (FSC) on the reproductive and endocrine functions in male rats.

Methods: (1) FSC were obtained from the semen of Cuscuta sinensis Lam through solvent extraction and polyamide columnar chromatography; (2) Effect of FSC on the reproductive organs was assessed in immature rats. Rats were administered FSC through gastric gavage at a dose of 300 mg/kg per day for 7 days and the weights of testis, epididymis, seminal vesicle and pituitary gland were then observed; (3) To observe the effect of FSC on the reproductive endocrine function: same dose level of FSC was given to male rats of different age groups for 7 days; on day 8, the plasma testosterone (T), estradiol (E2) and LH were determined by RIA, the specific binding of LH was estimated and the testes were weighed. (4) Effect of FSC on LH secretion was assessed in vitro on cultured adenohypophysis. (5) Effect of FSC on T secretion was assessed in vitro on Leydig cell culture.

Results: FSC increased the weights of testis, epididymis and pituitary gland, and stimulated T and LH secretion both in vitro and in immature rats.

Conclusion: FSC invigorates the reproductive system and reproductive endocrine function in male rats.

Dysregulation of GABAergic inhibition is associated with pathological pain. Consequently, enhancement of GABAergic transmission represents a potential analgesic strategy. However, therapeutic potential of current GABA agonists and modulators is limited by unwanted side effects.

Oppositional and competitive instigation of hippocampal synaptic plasticity by the VTA and locus coeruleus.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

January 2025

Department of Neurophysiology, Medical Faculty, Ruhr University Bochum, Bochum 44780, Germany.

The novelty, saliency, and valency of ongoing experiences potently influence the firing rate of the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and the locus coeruleus (LC). Associative experience, in turn, is recorded into memory by means of hippocampal synaptic plasticity that is regulated by noradrenaline sourced from the LC, and dopamine, sourced from both the VTA and LC. Two persistent forms of synaptic plasticity, long-term potentiation (LTP), and long-term depression (LTD) support the encoding of different kinds of spatial experience.

Neuronal TRPV1-CGRP axis regulates peripheral nerve regeneration through ERK/HIF-1 signaling pathway.

J Neurochem

State Key Laboratory of Oral Diseases & National Center for Stomatology & National Clinical Research Center for Oral Diseases, West China Hospital of Stomatology, Sichuan University, Chengdu, China.

Severe trauma frequently leads to nerve damage. Peripheral nerves possess a degree of regenerative ability, and actively promoting their recovery can help restore the sensory and functional capacities of tissues. The neuropeptide calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is believed to regulate the repair of injured peripheral nerves, with neuronal transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 (TRPV1) potentially serving as a crucial upstream factor.

Objectives: Our aim was to evaluate the comparative effects of sertraline and vortioxetine against stress-induced brain injury in rats.

Methods: The rats were assigned to a nonstress group (NSG), stress-treated control (StC), sertraline + stress (SSt), and vortioxetine + stress (VSt) groups. Sertraline and vortioxetine (10 mg/kg) were given orally by gavage to the SSt and VSt groups.
