A cluster (14 of 18) of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 23F isolates that were resistant to penicillin (PEN), cephalosporin, and macrolide was found in one day care center in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. We analyzed the 18 isolates by pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). All but one serotype 23F isolate demonstrated identical PFGE patterns, which were different from the established pattern of the internationally spread Spanish 23F clone. The three strains of serotype 19F also showed a uniform pattern. These data strongly suggest that two novel clones of PEN-, cephalosporin-, and macrolide-resistant S. pneumoniae serotypes 23F and 19F are present in Taiwan.

Multi-drug resistance (MDR) in continues to pose a significant public health challenge, particularly in developing countries. Recent advances in genomics strengthen the surveillance of MDR-pathogens and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) mediators. However, genome-based investigations into resistome dynamics in are limited, specifically in Bangladesh.

Treatment of infection presents significant challenges, exacerbated by the emergence of macrolide-resistant strains that necessitate the use of multiple antimicrobials in combination and carry the potential for significant toxic effects. Select dual beta-lactam combinations, with or without beta-lactamase inhibitors, have been shown to be highly active . Herein, we describe a 6-year-old child with underlying mild bilateral lower lobe cylindrical bronchiectatic lung disease who developed pulmonary infection and was treated with a multi-drug regimen including two β-lactam antibiotics, achieving both early clinical and microbiological cure.

Unlabelled: () affects patients with immunosuppression or underlying structural lung diseases such as cystic fibrosis (CF). Additionally, poses clinical challenges due to its resistance to multiple antibiotics. Herein, we investigated the synergistic effect of dual β-lactams [sulopenem and cefuroxime (CXM)] or the combination of sulopenem and CXM with β-lactamase inhibitors [BLIs-avibactam (AVI) or durlobactam (DUR)].

Background: The increasing incidence of syphilis and the limitations of first-line treatment with penicillin, particularly in neurosyphilis, neonatal syphilis, and pregnancy, highlight the need to expand the therapeutic repertoire for effective management of this disease. We assessed the in-vitro efficacy of 18 antibiotics from several classes on Treponema pallidum subspecies pallidum (T pallidum), the syphilis bacteria.
Methods: Using the in-vitro culture system for T pallidum, we exposed the pathogen to a concentration range of each tested antibiotic.

Streptococcus pneumoniae (Spn) kills Staphylococcus aureus (Sau) through a contact-dependent mechanism that is catalyzed by cations, including iron, to convert hydrogen peroxide (HO) to highly toxic hydroxyl radicals (OH). There are two well-characterized ABC transporters that contribute to the pool of iron in Spn, named Pia and Piu. Some Spn strains have acquired genes mef(E)/mel encoding another ABC trasporter (Mega) that produces an inducible efflux pump for resistance to macrolides.
