Aim: To characterize clinical symptoms of chronic bronchitis (CB) in Chernobyl wreckers.

Material And Methods: 71 CB male Chernobyl wreckers exposed to low-dose radiation and 43 control patients were examined and treated in a specialized hospital in 1988-1996. Clinical features of CB were investigated by clinical (complaints, history, objective examination), laboratory (total blood count, biochemical and immunological blood picture, coagulogram) and instrumental (fibrobronchoscopy, x-ray, radiometry, spirography) findings with further statistical processing.

Results: Chernobyl wreckers more frequently had neurocirculatory asthenia and hemoptysis. The latter was caused by bronchial mucosa atrophy. In chronic non-obstructive bronchitis they exhibited mild bronchoobstruction on the distal level. Laboratory indices showed no essential changes.

Conclusion: Chernobyl wreckers have a more severe course of CB.

The aim of the study was to detect radiation lesions in histological samples of bronchial mucosa in Chernobyl wreckers suffering from chronic non-obstructive bronchitis 10 years after Chernobyl accident by the micronuclear test. The study group consisting of Chernobyl wreckers was comparable to the controls by sex, age, smoking and morphological variants of chronic bronchitis. The test in the study group was positive as it showed a significant increase in the number of the ciliated cells in bronchial mucosa as compared to the control group.

Clinical and electromyographic (EMG) examinations of the Chernobyl wreckers exposed to radiation revealed radiological damage to peripheral nervous system. 10-15 years after the accident they complain of weakness, headache, dizziness, muscle pain. Late damage to the peripheral nervous system manifest with EMG-detected axonal and demyelinating lesions, compression injuries of the peripheral nerves (tunnel syndromes), involvement of spinal cord motor neurons.

Gastroduodenal disorders were studied endoscopically for 5 years in 159 Chernobyl wreckers and were compared to subjects unexposed to ionising radiation. Upper gastroduodenal tract was examined with esophagogastroduodenoscopy to avoid additional radiation load. It was found that 8-12 years after irradiation, many examinees had gastroduodenal mucosa erosions the rate of which was persistently high.

Aim: To study clinical effectiveness and antioxidant activity of N-acetylcisteine (NAC) in daily doses 600, 1200, 1800 and 2400 mg in Chernobyl wreckers suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD).

Material And Methods: Cough intensity and expectoration, malonic dialdehyde (MD), plasma calcium ions concentrations were studied in patients taking NAC.

Results: Cough intensity diminished insignificantly.
