Association between polycystic ovary and fibrocystic breast disease.

Gynecol Obstet Invest

1st Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University of Rome 'La Sapienza', Rome, Italy.

Published: May 2001

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess whether or not there was an association between a polycystic ovary (PCO) and fibrocystic breast disease based on ultrasound findings, both pelvic and mammographic.

Design: Prospective case-control study.

Population: Women aged between 18 and 30 years not using oral contraceptives attending the outpatient ultrasound clinic from January 1996 to December 1998.

Main Outcome: Confirm the association between PCO and fibrocystic breast disease.

Results: According to the ultrasound findings, women were allocated to three groups: 351 out of 456 showed normal-appearing ovaries (group A), 93 had polycystic-appearing ovaries/PCO (group B) and 12 had PCO syndrome (group C). In group A, 24 (6.83%) women showed breast pathology. In group B, there was an association between PCO and breast pathology in 53 (56.98%) women, while in group C it was noted in 11 out of 12 (91%).

Conclusion: This study showed a significant association between PCO and benign pathology. This should encourage the performance of a screening breast sonography on women with PCO.

Epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) has been shown to play an essential role in the early stages of cancer cell invasion and metastasis. Inducible EMT models can initiate EMT in a controlled manner, thereby providing the opportunity to determine whether a cancer-associated gene influences cancer metastasis by triggering EMT. Moreover, different inducible EMT models enable the investigation of specific mechanisms of EMT modulation by various genes, facilitating a more precise understanding of how these genes influence cancer metastasis through the induction of EMT.

Background: Parathyroid adenoma is the primary cause of primary hyperparathyroidism, commonly presenting with elevated parathyroid hormone (PTH) and blood calcium levels. Chronic primary hyperparathyroidism often results in bone destruction, resulting in the formation of brown tumors. The preferred clinical treatment for parathyroid adenoma is parathyroidectomy.

Background: Mammography has become an invaluable tool for diagnosing breast lesions and detecting early breast cancer in women of 35 years and above.

Aims: To correlate the mammography Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) categories with the histology in breast lesions and to determine the predictive values, sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of mammography.

Patients And Method: This was a one- year prospective study carried out from March 2015 to February 2016.

Article Synopsis
  • - Danazol is a synthetic progestin with androgenic effects approved for treating conditions like endometriosis and is increasingly used for menstrual suppression in transgender and nonbinary individuals, despite a lack of research on its efficacy in this population
  • - A retrospective study reviewed the experiences of transgender patients using danazol for menstrual suppression at two healthcare centers between 2000 and 2022, comparing those who did and did not use the treatment
  • - Results indicated that most patients remained on danazol during follow-ups, with improvements in gender dysphoria, pelvic pain, and menstrual symptoms, and most achieved amenorrhea, suggesting its potential as an effective option for menstrual suppression in this demographic
