Background: We have previously shown that our patient population of 60% minority races has end-stage renal disease primarily as a result of diabetes mellitus and hypertension. It therefore was logical to explore the restoration of normal insulin production and renal function by simultaneous pancreas-kidney (SPK) transplantation, without regard to race. This study represents new analyses integrating race with C-peptide status and reports the outcome of 136 SPK transplantations performed over the last 10 years.

Results: Of the 49 African-Americans with diabetes mellitus and end-stage renal disease, 60% were type I and 40% were type II, based on C-peptide levels. In comparison, only 16% of Caucasians were type II. The average age at onset of diabetes mellitus was 15.7 years for type I compared with 20.7 years for type II (P>0.05). The actuarial 10-year survival rates for the 136 SPKs were 91.79% (patient), 85.07% (pancreas), and 83.58% (kidney). The type I and type II survival rates were similar in the two diabetic groups.

Conclusions: The data strongly suggest that pretransplant C-peptide status does not influence the outcome of SPK transplantation in patients with renal failure from diabetes mellitus. SPK transplants should be offered to all suitable diabetic patients with renal failure regardless of C-peptide status or race.

Backgrounds And Aim: To prospectively evaluate the associations between changes in (poly)phenol intake, body weight(BW), and physical activity(PA) with changes in an inflammatory score after 1-year.

Methods And Results: This is a prospective observational analysis involving 484 participants from the PREDIMED-Plus with available inflammatory measurements. (Poly)phenol intake was estimated using a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire and the Phenol-Explorer database.

Health and Liver Diagnostic Markers Influencing Glycemia in Subjects with Prediabetes: Preview Study.

Diagnostics (Basel)

December 2024

Centre for Nutrition Research, Department of Nutrition, Food Science, Physiology and Toxicology, University of Navarra, 31009 Pamplona, Spain.

Introduction: Glucose homeostasis may be dependent on liver conditions and influence health-related markers and quality of life (QoL) objective measurements. This study aimed to analyze the interactions of glycemia with liver and health status in a prediabetic population.

Subjects And Methods: This study included 2220 overweight/obese prediabetics from the multinational PREVIEW project.

Endurance training enhances skeletal muscle mitochondrial respiration by promoting MOTS-c secretion.

The mitochondrial open reading frame of 12S rRNA-c (MOTS-c) is a biologically active mitochondria-derived peptide. However, the relationship between MOTS-c, skeletal muscle mitochondrial function, and endurance exercise adaptations is unknown. Here, we tested indices such as maximal oxygen uptake and serum MOTS-c levels in marathon runners and sedentary subjects.

Aims: To describe the change in impaired awareness of hypoglycaemia (IAH) over time and to identify factors associated with this change in the Dutch Type 1 Diabetes biomarkers cohort (NCT04977635).

Methods: A prospective cohort of type 1 diabetes patients, with C-peptide <300 pmol/L, who had completed the Clarke questionnaire, to determine IAH status, at baseline and after 2 years. Changes in awareness status were defined and compares as follows: unchanged normal awareness (NAH) versus unchanged IAH, new IAH versus reversal of IAH.

The Relationship Between Computerized Face and Tongue Image Segmentation and Metabolic Parameters in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Based on Machine Learning.

Diabetes Metab Syndr Obes

October 2024

Department of Endocrinology, Shanghai Pudong Hospital, Fudan University, Pudong Medical Center, Shanghai, 201399, People's Republic of China.

Objective: We aim to examine and reestablish the correlational and linear regression relationships, as well as the predictive value, between the significant facial and tongue features and the metabolic parameters in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

Materials And Methods: From March to May 2024, we studied 269 patients with T2DM in the endocrinology department of Shanghai Pudong Hospital. The patients' facial and tongue characteristics were sampling by a tongue imaging device equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) (XiMaLife, Sinology, China) of automated and advanced machine learning algorithms.
