Diabetes mellitus is a prevalent chronic autoimmune disease with a high impact on global health, affecting millions of adults and resulting in significant morbidity and mortality. Achieving optimal blood glucose levels is crucial for diabetes management to prevent acute and long-term complications. Carbohydrate counting (CC) is widely used by patients with type 1 diabetes to adjust prandial insulin bolus doses based on estimated carbohydrate content, contributing to better glycemic control and improved quality of life.

Unlabelled: Patients attending vascular or diabetic foot clinics commonly have atherosclerotic disease, are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), merit high-intensity lipid-modifying therapy to maintain secondary prevention targets and are often sub optimally treated in primary care. We set out to assess the impact of a pharmacist led lipid optimisation clinic in these patients in an area with high levels of social deprivation.

Methods: We performed a clinical cohort study to assess the effectiveness of a pharmacist led clinic to optimise lipid lowering therapy by optimising of statin therapy and commencing additional lipid lowering therapy if applicable with monitoring of blood lipid profiles.

For patients with Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), accurate carbohydrate counting (CC) is essential for successful blood glucose regulation. Unfortunately, mistakes are common and may lead to an incorrect dosage of prandial insulin. In this work, we aim to demonstrate that each person has their own limits for CC errors, which can be computed using patient-specific data.

Article Synopsis
  • Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a growing global health crisis affecting insulin use, with an estimated 700 million diagnoses by 2045, leading to complications like heart disease and inflammation.
  • A study using 207 genetically diverse Collaborative Cross (CC) mice examined how a high-fat diet (HFD) impacts blood glucose clearance and organ weights, finding that HFD led to decreased glucose clearance and different weight responses between male and female mice.
  • The research highlights the importance of genetic factors in T2DM, showing that female liver weight increased significantly with HFD, while males exhibited higher heritability for weight changes under the same dietary conditions.
