Comparative Genomics Points to Ecological Drivers of Genomic Divergence Among Intertidal Limpets.

Mol Ecol Resour

January 2025

Instituto de Ciencias Ambientales y Evolutivas, Universidad Austral de Chile, Valdivia, Chile.

Comparative genomic studies of closely related taxa are important for our understanding of the causes of divergence on a changing Earth. This being said, the genomic resources available for marine intertidal molluscs are limited and currently, there are few publicly available high-quality annotated genomes for intertidal species and for molluscs in general. Here we report transcriptome assemblies for six species of Patellogastropoda and genome assemblies and annotations for three of these species (Scurria scurra, Scurria viridula and Scurria zebrina).

Chemistry as a Catalyst for Transforming the Health and Wealth of South Africa.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

January 2025

Department of Chemistry, University of Cape Town, Rondebosch, Cape Town, 7701, South Africa.

South Africa's rich natural resources remain a key driver of its chemical industrialisation but are tainted and constrained by its complex colonial history. Thirty years since the advent of democracy in South Africa, deep sociopolitical inequalities are amplified by an intolerable infectious disease burden amongst disadvantaged communities. In that respect, South Africa shares challenges with many other nations in the Global South; there are limited opportunities for the economic development and growth needed to uplift all strata of society.

Background And Aims: Mount Kinabalu is an isolated, geologically young mountain (the Pliocene and early Pleistocene) in northern Borneo harboring a highly diverse flora with a high level of endemism. It is one of the global centers of fern diversity, but how this diversity has evolved has not been studied to date. We assess patterns of evolutionary legacies in the fern flora of Mount Kinabalu, with an emphasis of testing the tropical niche conservatism hypothesis.

Background: As the burden of chronic liver disease and the demand for liver transplants (LT) grows, understanding the interplay between access to care and patient outcomes is increasingly important. In this study, we explored patient characteristics and transplant outcomes in patients undergoing LT evaluations, with a focus on identifying risk factors for expedited LT evaluation.

Methods: This single-center retrospective cohort study included patients who underwent LT evaluation for deceased donor LT between October 2017 and July 2021.

The exploration of our solar system for microbial extraterrestrial life is the primary goal of several space agencies. Mars has attracted substantial attention owing to its Earth-like geological history and potential niches for microbial life. This study evaluated the suitability of the polyextremophilic fungal strain LaBioMMi 1217 as a model eukaryote for astrobiology.
