Ovarian gastrinoma in multiple endocrine neoplasia type I: a case report.

Am J Obstet Gynecol

Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Hospital of Soissons, Reims, France.

Published: January 2001

We report a very rare case of ovarian gastrinoma in the context of multiple endocrine neoplasia type I, including primary hyperparathyroidism and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Somatostatin receptor scintigraphy revealed the ovarian involvement at an early stage. Oophorectomy led to the final diagnosis and complete healing.

Secondary neoplasms of the urinary bladder are uncommon, with metastatic tumors being an even rarer event. The authors studied the clinicopathology of 11 cases of metastatic tumors to bladder, which were collected from their archives between 1995 and 2010. The most common metastases in this series were breast.

The extracellular calcium-sensing receptor (CaR) is a versatile 'sensor' for di- and polycationic molecules in the body. CaR plays a key role in the defense against hypercalcemia by "sensing" extracellular calcium levels in the parathyroid and kidney, the key organs maintaining systemic calcium homeostasis. Although mutation of CaR gene has so far not been associated with any malignancy, aberrant functions of CaR have implications in malignant progression.

The biology of cholecystokinin and gastrin peptides.

Curr Top Med Chem

September 2007

Department of Clinical Biochemistry, Rigshospitalet, University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Cholecystokinin (CCK) and gastrin together constitute a family of homologous peptide hormones, which are both physiological ligands for the gastrin/CCK-B receptor, whereas the CCK-A receptor binds only sulfated CCK-peptides. CCK peptides are mainly produced in small intestinal endocrine I-cells and in cerebral neurons. CCK peptides regulate pancreatic enzyme secretion and growth, gallbladder contraction, intestinal motility, satiety and inhibit gastric acid secretion.

Multiple RET proto-oncogene transcripts, due to genomic variations and alternate splicing, have been described. To investigate endocrine tumor tissue characteristic RET proto-oncogene expression, we performed quantitative RT-PCR, Northern blot and Southern blot analyses of benign and malignant endocrine-derived tissues. We newly describe RET proto-oncogene expression in carcinoid-, gastrinoma- and insulinoma-derived tissue samples.
